Is Amex Platinum worth the Annual Fee?

Hi,

I've read various opinions about this but was wondering what Tuggers think. That $395 fee is pretty steep and I had always thought that it was probably not worth it. I'm only thinking about it slightly since I just received an offer for 25,000 MR points if I sign-up. Thanks.
 
As an ex Platinum Card holder I can tell you that I'm now very happy with my Senior American Express Card which costs about $50 annually. Let's see - 10 years @ $395 = $3,950; 10 years with my Senior Card = $500. The extra Platinum Card features (which I only used once or twice in over 10 years) are no longer worth the price difference to me.

No, it is not worth the extra fee. The supposed hotel extras are just added to the price of the rooms. The free companion ticket, well the first ticket cost is just doubled. There are a few more benefits that are nice, But not worth it.

It depends on how much you fly. Entrance to the Delta, Continental and Northwest clubs are included. Club membership costs that much!
Also, I was the victim of a pickpocket on Easter Sunday. AmEx replaced my cards overnight in spite of the fact that Easter monday was a bank holiday and everything was closed.
I have also used the concierge service - they were very helpful.

I forgot to add that I had to wait until Thursday for another card. Would have been out of luck!
 
Thank you for your replies. It would be nice to have privileges in the Airline Clubs, but the price is really steep. I will likely take a pass. Thanks.
 
As noted already, the airline club access is nice. If you like to cruise, they have cruise privilages that can cover the expense of the card. There's also a rebate if you use the AMEX travel service based upon the value of you vacation packages. Finally, the membership rewards annual fee is dropped. All that added together has saved me money in the long run. I've never used the 2-for-1 airfare.
 
senior amex?

Does the senior amex give reward points, George? I am ready to ditch my rewards amex for a fee-less costco amex and continue using my AA & Continental affililiated cards as those are the carriers I travel most.
