We just got back from spending two weeks in Florida where I only had a dial-up connection so I waited to get back home before even attempting to connect my new iTouch. Before I do, I want to ask some questions.

I'd like to continue to use my Nano as well as the iTouch. I see by reading at Apple Support that I can connect two iPods using the same software/computer (My OS is Windows Vista). But I'd like the same music that I have purchased loaded onto both and to be able to load/unload the books I buy from Audible.com on each as well and am not sure if I can do that. Can I?

When I turned on my computer today (keep in mind I stil have not hooked my new iTouch to my computer yet) iTunes brought up new software to install. I agreed and it installed the latest version of iTunes but stalled and wouldn't install two others, something for mobile and Safari, that I believe I need for the iTouch. This happens often when Apple sends me an update notice. The process begins and then just stalls. I click cancel and that begins and then stalls as well. I have to ctrl/alt/delete to get out. I usually just wait till Apple notifies me again and sometimes it works, updates and installs sometimes it just stalls. Is there an easy solution?

Any suggestions before I try setting up the iTouch?

Thanks.

There have been some reports of bugs in Itunes 8 on windows. There are some patches on Itunes support .I've held off so they can get the bugs out. If you can get itunes working you can set up you ipods in itunes 7 & then later do the upgrade to 8.

I hope this helps

Not a problem. As Frank said, it will just work. Each ipod will have a different name, and you can have different settings for each one.

You don't need and probably don't want Mobile Me or the Safari Browser. You should uncheck them when Apple Software Update runs. They have nothing to do with itunes. All you need to update is itunes and quicktime.

This is one of the things I really hate about Apple Software Update. They are trying to push people to use the Safari browser on PCs, and use their itunes Apple Software Update to do it. If you have a Mac, you might want Mobile Me (which is a paid service that can help you keep all your computers, iphones, etc in sync), and you might want the Safari web browser, but if you're a PC user, you probably don't want either of them installed on your computers. It won't hurt to install them, but if you don't use them, it's just a waste of disk space, and any services that get installed with them waste memory and some cpu cycles. If you accidentally installed them, then I would remove Mobile Me and Safari through Add/Remove Programs. Then remember to uncheck them the next time Apple Software Update runs.

Just connect the ipod touch and it should all work.

Most of the third party programs don't work with the iphone or the ipod touch because they don't show up as disks.

I think I found one thing that would work with the ipod touch, but it involves using different firmware on the device itself. It's not something I would recommend anybody here try. Plus you lose some of the features, IIRC.

Things might have changed since I looked at this before, but I doubt it, because all of the third party programs depend on being able to access the ipod as a disk, so they can see and manipulate the files directly on the device.

How about Audible books? That's the main use of my iPod....listening to books.

Misc...

Icarus: Not a problem. As Franks said, it will just work. Each ipod will have a different name, and you can have different settings for each one.

Glynda: I hoooked it up and saw that it recognized the new device and I was able to easily sync what I wanted to it. I haven't reattached the Nano to see if my settings are the same for it (checked music and books that are loaded on it).

Icarus: You don't need and probably don't want Mobile Me or the Safari Browser. You should uncheck them when Apple Software Update runs. They have nothing to do with itunes. All you need to update is itunes and quicktime.

Glynda: Ah...I figured that out too as I turned on the iTouch and tried Safari before downloading it to my computer and (after walking to the garage where my wireless device is to get it to recognize it) worked. I did see that Mobile Me downloaded so I removed it. Apparently that one costs extra.

Icarus: Just connect the ipod touch and it should all work.

Glynda: It does and it's great fun....for now. :)

However, I'm used to a tap Treo and am having a hard time getting fat fingers to touch the right place. Also, I set it up to get my email but for some reason I am unable to delete the email. I see how to do it but it sends a message that it can't be moved. What's with that?

New iPod user with basic questions

I have a Nano second generation and my wife has a new Nano 4th generation. Right now, I have mine synced to my business laptop and hers to our home desktop.

What do I need to do to set it up on my home desktop so that I can sync both iPods. We each have different things on our iPods and want to keep it that way.

How many iPods can I do what I've asked above on one computer?

How do I delete songs and podcasts from my Nano 2nd Generation but keep them in my library on my computer so I can reload them at a later date?

What do the blue dots in the left hand column of my library mean? Are they new additions or items I've never listened to?

Is there any way to change the balance (volume right side versus left side) on an iPod 2nd Generation or later versions? I have one very bad ear that I need the sound to be much louder than the other. Can you get earbuds or earphones for an iPod that you can adjust the balance? Any suggestions?

Any help will be appreciated. I am brand new to this all.

When you connect the ipod, turn off automatic sync, and manually manage your music on each ipod.

If your itunes library is different on the two computers, and the contents contains non-purchases (stuff you ripped yourself, or downloaded elsewhere, for example) then you have to copy over your music from the old computer to the new computer to get into the new computer's itunes library.

I don't know of any limit.

Manually manage the contents of the ipod, and delete them from the ipod in itunes. It doesn't delete them from itunes library.

I don't know.

I have no idea. Have you tried researching it yourself?
