I think I have already been told the answer, but here it goes. My computer died. I told the tech to please save the ITune Downloads. Well, he couldn't, the hard drive crashed or is corrupted. My question, I've been told if my son starts using the "NEW" PC for ITUNES he will lose everything on his IPOD. If this is true that's a crock of----!
Is there any way if he was to buy a NEW IPOD to transfer his data from the old to the new, & then start Downloading to the new PC? I have also heard this can't be done. Is there anyway around this? I told my son the only thing to do is to buy a new IPOD, and just carry both around with him.
Thank You for your responses

There's software you can buy which will transfer the tunes from the IPOD back to the new computer. I don't know what it is called.

Until you get it, make sure your Itunes software is NOT set to "synchronyze" with the IPOD. Mine is set that way. I do my updates and syncs manually.

There are dozens of Apple Techs & Volunteers on the Apple site.

Go here and click the unit you are asking about.

http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/family/

They will probably tell you how to save the i tune library or transfer it.

Problem is, you may have to wait for an answer. Bookmark the location, as they have sections for all the Apple computers, too (Even the old Apples (before MAC)....so it get hard to get back to find your responses.

Found this page on About.com which describes what to do to make sure you don't lose everything, by switching to manual sync. It also suggests iPodRip as a product that will allow you to transfer music from the iPod back to iTunes.

I think you should always set it up so it's in manual sync mode.

I downloaded and used ipodcopy (http://www.wideanglesoftware.com/)
and was able to save what was on our ipod and transfer to our new computer when we replaced it. I tried a variety of the free ones but ended up buying this downloaded program for $20. Very easy to use.

Backup..

I know this won't help the OP, but to all of you -- backup what you have in your iTunes library using iPod's own backup software. . Takes about 4 minutes per disc and each disc holds somewhere around 250- 300 songs. Computer program does it all pretty automatically, kind of point and click simple. This way you have control and can put your library on any new computer, easily.

I'm not sure if I am repeating something said in earlier post. We back up our ITunes library using the ITunes software. We used dvds to do the back up and we have 3 dvd's totaling about 30 hours of music. The software will remember what has been backed up and will only burn to disk new material from previous back up.

Thanks

Thanks for all the information and hope. This Thursday we are going to the "Apple" store in the mall. I would prefer to buy something from them, then to take my chances on downloading from the internet. This way my son can talk directly to a sales associate and know what to do.:)

:::Sigh::: You asked for help, and somebody pointed you to Ipodlounge, which is like TUG for IPods. You also got good suggestions from others on this thread. And now you've decided to go to the Apple store to buy "something" and ask them for help. What makes you think that the person working there will be as knowledgeable as the people who help on Ipodlounge? Are the salespeople at the timeshares as knowledgeable as the longtimers at TUG?

Sorry if I sound harsh. Its really JMHO. But think about it.

The people at the Apple Store will probably want to sell you a new iPod, since that is what you originally assumed. Just like going into a timeshare presentation, your trip to the store should be done with your eyes open.

Visit the other forums first, so you know what you're talking about with the salesperson. Otherwise you will find yourself buyin yet another iPod when you don't need a new one. It's not like you're the first person to have this happen - I guarantee many have been in this position before, and the solution is just sitting there on the appropriate forum.

Then again, I know people who have been directed here for information about timeshares who never visit. Their loss.

use ephpod....100x better than itunes...and allows you to copy to and from your ipod to any computer.

You Don't Understand

I viewed all those sites, and put them on my favorites. I thank you for that. I am so thrilled there is something out there that will transfer my sons songs to the new computer. I am not computer smart, so I want someone to tell my son exactly what to do, and what to do in the future. I asked my son this morning if he synchronyzes his songs. He had no clue what I was talking about. Trust me I will not buy a new IPOD. We are going to the mall for back-to-school shopping, Apple just happens to be there.
