The interesting thing is all of that could also be done on the great Palm products that predated the iPhone by almost 5 years!

Yeah, and it can all be done on a $150 unsubsidized Android phone as well. But I'm glad folks spend $600-$700 on phones. Puts money in my pocket! :whoopie:

You don't have to make something original to be successful. You just have to do it better and/or market it better. It's pretty clear to me that Apple has done that.

One of my most successful ventures came when I ran across a problem and thought "This would be easier if a web site solved the problem. I wonder if any do?" I searched. There were two or three, but they were awful. So I spent the next few months building a better mouse trap. And I've spent the last 10 years reaping the rewards.

Truth. Great advice, which applies to all industries.

We upgrade our iPhones every time we're eligible for an upgrade (or wait a few months if a new version is coming out soon). I'm eligible now, but waiting. Our old iPhones (with no phone service) get passed down to the kids essentially as iPod Touches. The 3 year old is ready to get his own, and the 7 and 10 year old are looking forward to newer ones.

I only use my iPhone as a phone. And to check email. And to browse the web. And as a calendar. And a rolodex. And a camera. And a photo album. And basic photo editing. And to check the weather. And as a GPS. And to find cheap gas. And for subway maps. And to check stock prices, access my bank, my credit cards and my investment accounts. And to find good restaurants and restaurant deals. And to check movie times, find Redbox locations, listen to music, stream Netflix and Amazon Prime video. And to listen to podcasts. And to read books and the Bible. And to compare prices when I'm shopping in a store. And to shop at eBay and Amazon. And to review sales at Sams and Costco. And to organize our travel. And digital boarding passes. And flight tracking. And for travel guides. And to search for flights. And to look things up on Wikipedia. And as a dictionary. And sometimes to check sports scores. And for a Spanish/English dictionary. And to read Drudge, the WSJ and USA Today. And to watch movies and TV shows. And as a calculator. And to take notes. And as an alarm clock, world clock, and timer. And as a flashlight. And as a Roku remote when we misplace ours. And to log into various PCs of ours. And for dozens of games for me and the kids. And to check Disney wait times and details. And as a credit card terminal. And to view incoming faxes from eFax. And to look up Per Diem rates. And to monitor newsletter performance. And to view incoming orders. And to convert web pages to PDF files. And to make "fan" sounds when we travel without our fan. And to identify songs that I like.

If I lose my iPhone or the battery dies, I'm lost without it. There's not much I don't do on it.

Finally, I can make sense of why iOS is actually used to access the Internet twice as much as Android despite Android having a larger market share.

I thought it was the elegance and great ease of use of iOS, but its really just Michael.

Im kind of like Michael. I haven't found much I cant do with my Iphone. And like him, my and dh gets passed to the teenagers so everyone gets a "new" phone. We like getting the newest model, and the boys like getting the "almost" newest model. win win for the whole family.

My entire life is in my phone. My memory is horrible! Forget remembering a dr apt without it being in the calendar with alert reminders. My phone is never far from my fingertips, and I use it for nearly everything.

What I like about the most iPhone is what I've liked about Macintosh from the first time I used one (although I've never used anything but PCs/Windows). They are simple, intuitive, and consistent. They're made for the masses. Even my 3 year old can figure it out.

My wife can't wait until 9/20 when the new iPhones are released. I hope they offer the iPhone 6 and not just the iPhone 5s. Maybe I can convince her she needs my iPhone 5 and I can score the 6

Not even a hint of an iPhone 6 anywhere I've seen. And the current brain trust at Apple doesn't seem likely to be able to pull off any unexpected and stunning announcement like that would be. Maybe back when Jobs was around but not now.

Kids can figure anything out because they're open minded. It's those that are set in their ways that can't.

Sorry I missed the pissing match, but being a girl, we don't score too well anyway. ;)

That being said, I'm living in the dark ages with my husband's cast off iPhone 3g. Frankly I'm perfectly content with it (read Michael's post of all the things you can DO with one of these), however I charge the battery probably twice a day now. I need to upgrade, but obviously I'm not one who needs latest and greatest. What is the best/most economical/least "issue free" iphone upgrade alternative?

You can get a replacement battery for about $10 and replace it yourself. Search YouTube for your model + replace battery and you'll find tons of videos showing how to do it. Takes about 5 minutes.

Wait until right after Sept 10th. Right now the "free" version is the iPhone 4, but I bet they'll officially retire the iPhone 4 on Sept 10th and will make the iPhone 4S the new "free" version. Alternatively, they may make the new iPhone 5c (c stands for color or cheap depending on your perspective) the new "free" version and they may retire the 4 and 4s altogether. I would bet on the latter.

The 5c will have a plastic back instead of aluminum and will come in 4 or 5 colors. I'm sure it will support the new iOS 7 which will make it automatically better then any Android phone.

Dude, be careful of the Android police...they'll show up soon to discredit your post!

Most users can't be trusted with an open system, it's techies that like to tinker under the hood. If people ask me I recommend a locked down OS, it's a feature that means I won't be called in a month to remove all the malware little Johnny got on moms new laptop / tablet surfing porn sites.
