Hi, I believe I have an iPad air2. Most of the time it works just fine. But sometimes when I attempt to type an email, shop online, or post here on TUGbbs I have trouble with the keys...

The keys act like they are possessed and runoff like they are crazy... I type/tap the letter key once but it will give me 4 letters instead... it's almost like I have no control of the keyboard. A simple 3 minute email takes 10 minutes to correct all the mistakes the computer makes.

Has anybody else had this problem? Can anyone offer some suggestions?

Thanks,
Carol

You've probably done all this, but have you tried a full shut down and reboot? Is the keyboard clean? Are you hitting the keys harder than normal? Do others have the same issue when they type on your screen? Have you tried turning the iPad sideways, to change the orientation when you type, to put the keyboard in a different part of the screen? Check Google to see if there is a recalibration option you can do for the keyboard? All or none of that may help. Good luck!

You can make an appointment at an Apple Store. We had a problem with a different apple product and they helped free of charge.

I have the IPad Air and this started on mine just a few weeks ago. Didn’t do it all the time but enough to make it irritating! I recently upgraded to IOS 11 and those problems went away. The keyboard in 11 is so much better than the old one. I also like the idea of in my case having 11 apps on my docking bar.

Hi Dave, I've done everything you suggest (except the Google recalibration of the keyboard). My old ipad2 never did this.

I could make the 1.5 hr trip to the Apple Store. Do they charge you for their service?

If you're under warranty, no charge for a repair. Also, you can make an appointment with the Genius Bar and that's free but if it requires repair other than tinkering with the iOS, it will depend if your under warranty or not.

Apple chat and the forums at apple.com can be very helpful.

Cheers

Here's an online suggestion. I'd put ios 11 on first......

Potential solutions:

  • Hold down the Sleep/Wake button and slide to power off. If the touchscreen won’t work you can hold down the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button together for ten seconds instead.
  • When the iPad Air is off, use a damp microfiber cloth to clean the screen gently.
  • If there’s a screen protector on your iPad Air it could be the culprit.
  • Try pressing the Home button three times or check in Settings > General > Accessibility and make sure that VoiceOver isn’t turned on.
  • You could try a backup and restore via Settings > iCloud > Storage & Backup > Back Up Now and then Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Content and Settings.
  • If the problem remains then make an appointment with Apple to have your iPad Air looked at.
