Iowa Wants to Let You Carry Your Driver's License on Your Phone - by Tarun Wadhwa / Tech/ HuffingtonPost.com

"There's now a technology to replace almost everything in your wallet. Your cash, credit cards, and loyalty programs are all on their way to becoming obsolete. Money can now be sent via app, text, e-mail -- it can even be sent via Snapchat. But you can't leave your wallet home just yet. That's because there is one item that remains largely unchanged: your drivers license.

If the Iowa Department of Motor Vehicles has its way, that may no longer be the case...."

I find it funny that you must carry your drivers licence at all times. Nothing like a state id card or communist carrying your papers.
Many parts of the world you only have to produce it at the police station within 7 days of request by a police officer.

There's a big difference between being required to carry a driver's license when you are enjoying the privilege of driving vs. being required to have a government ID with you at all times.

Driving without a valid driver's license is illegal in every state. People who don't have their licenses on them may get cited, may get a warning or may get a ticket – it all depends. If they do, they may get afforded a chance to later prove they have a license to avoid a fine. If an officer cites you for driving without a license, you (or your lawyer) must go to court on the scheduled court date. While driving without a license is a relatively minor offense, it's nonetheless a misdemeanor in most states. A conviction would show up on your criminal record.

Much easier to just carry it with you than going through the headache of proving later on that you do, in fact, have a license.

Don't get caught in Canada driving without your drivers license. Very rarely would you get a warning or a chance to bring your license into the police station.

Depending on which province you are in, they can: Fine you, seize your vehicle for up to 30 days. Either way, you will not be able to drive the vehicle anywhere until there is an operator with a license behind the wheel.

Driving without insurance is even worse.

So if I get stopped by a traffic cop, would he expect me to hand him my phone (with license displayed) so that he can take it back to his patrol car and play with it???

No thanks, not for me! :-(

Yes but as I said in Europe that is not the case. You can produce the licence later.
Innocent until proven guilty and all that.

You know, if I was in an accident and the other driver couldn't product a driver's license at the time, I think I'd be pretty upset.

And as a driver I'd much rather produce my license at the time rather than have to take time to go into the police station, or court house, at a later date.

But, to each their own.

I wonder how this would/will shake out with "Real ID." Will the TSA accept a picture of the "Real ID" Driver's License, since Iowa says it is OK, or will they need to see the real thing (more likely). And if they need to see the real thing to allow you to board the plane, will this confuse Iowans?

It's a cultural thing. Europeans would find the opposite weird.
Now UK licences have a credit card sized part most of us carry that in out wallets but there is a paper counterpart that inincludes the conviction sheet and points. You need both to be considered to be carrying your liceence otherwise yiu are just carrying govt issued photo Id.

Maybe they would just use their phones to scan the code on your license.

Good point. My phone is a clamshell with text messaging blocked at my request. An guess what? I'm not changing.

George

Don't worry, I don't see how they can force you to buy a product you don't want that is generally sold in years-long contracts.

The good ole dl card ought to be around for a very long time.
