I am a total newbie at Timeshares. I want to do soemthing that will give my family some flexibility. I was looking to buy some Intrawest points. I like the resorts. There is one a couple of hours from my home.

Just before Christmas I read an article that Intrawest missed a loan payment. Yikes. I am conerned about how solid they are. And what if the sell off one of the key resorts?

I think I got a pretty good deal on the points.

I have signed a contract but have not paid yet.

I am concerned about the future of Intrawest. They seem solid. I am sure the main. fees provide a pretty good income stream. And I think the winter has been off to a strong start. So that should help revenues.

Any advice would be appreciated.

There are two different Intrawests.

Club Intrawest is the TS company, they are fully paid for resorts and have no loans to miss payments on.

Intrawest Corp is the developer of the many ski & other resorts around N. America. They do have many loans and could miss payments. If they went under it wouldn't effect Club Intrawest.

But since Intrawest Corp does develop new club resort locations for Club Intrawest there may be a slight concern. BUT at this time many of the TS developers are not developing new resort locations. ( westin /starwood isn't developing any new resorts right now too)

You seems to be saying that you went to a Club Intrawest (CI) location and purchased a TS package from them. If so, you have the right to cancel that purchase within a few days of signing. (Normally 5-10 days but varies so look at your contract) The price you paid by buying from the developer is a lot more than you would have paid if you had bought from a current owner (about $100 more per pt)

If you plan on using mostly the CI resorts, it will not matter to you very much if you buy from a current owner or buy from the developer (except of course for the significant amount of money you'd save)

BUT if you bought so you could use the CI exchange company, you can only do that if you buy direct from the developer.

IMHO, you could get all the benefits of CI by buying from a current owner and use the money you'd save to buy a second TS from Hilton (HGVC) which gives you access to almost everything the CI exchange company has access to.

I bought the points from two different existing owners.

I think I got a pretty good deal. right around $50.00 per point plus transfer and intrawest fees. I think all in it was close to $60.00 per point.

Thanks for the information on the different Intrawest companies.

I cant exchange through CI but it sounds like there are other options for exchanges. Any advice on the best way to exchange would be appreciated.

Great deal!! Anything around $60/pt is great.

As a non direct buying owner, you'll be allowed to open a RCI weeks account and use it to trade. BUT IMHO, I'd wait on that for several years and use the CI resorts first. They are the best.
