Aren't some of the first few floors considered garden view?
Floors 2 & 3 in Compass are Garden View.

You are correct, Aruba Surf Club does not honor the view code. They have a complicated 8 category room assignment for owners, exchangers and renters. Aruba Ocean Club only has two views and they honor them.
all other Marriott’s I have gone to have put me in the view I exchanged into.
You were just lucky! That has not been my experience at Surf Club. When we traded into an ocean-view we were given an ocean-view. 7th Floor Compass Tower.
But this assignment order is all still based on placing you into the unit you own and/or reserved. So if you use points to book OV, you will get OV. Same for OF. The same would be true if you own OF, OS or OV and book your home resort week. They won't (at least not usually) upgrade an owner who owns GV and put them in OV or OF. They would only have flexibility with cash or Bonvoy based stays in their ability to upgrade them from what they booked and downgrade an external exchange guest. I suppose it is also possible that they skim off the OV, OS and OF reservations and put those into the Abound points program and then take the exchange guest whos unit code shows OV, OS or OF and place them in GV. The pecking order is mainly to determine how they prioritize the better units within the same view category. Here are the Aruba Surf Club “ rules”
The Aruba Surf Club enjoys one of the highest Owner occupancy of all Marriott Vacation Club Resorts. As is true at every property, we place our Owners at the very top of the priority list in terms of request for villa locations and preferences. Because of the very high
number of Owners that we welcome each week, we are often challenged with villa location preferences that we are essentially unable to grant. We respectfully ask for your understanding and acceptance of our meticulous adherence to the established priorities of
villa assignments as listed below. As the Aruba Surf Club is completely sold out, there is virtually no availability to upgrades. Since you are almost certain to be vacationing during the same week as many Surf Club Owners, ti is likely that the resorts' physical capacity wil not support the number of requests for particular views or locations. Requests are handled (and granted when available) in the following order:
.1 Surf Club (Home) Owners occupying their ownership weeks ("in season")
2. Surf Club Owners using Destinations Points
3. Surf Club Owners exchanging through Interval International
4. MarriottOwnersatanotherMVCIresortexchangingintoSurfClubthroughInterval
International or Destination points
5. SurfClubOwnersthatarerentingaguestroomorvilla
6. Guests visiting Surf Club on a sales preview package
7. Marriott Reward Members that are visiting Surf Club on Marriott Reward point redemption
8. Guestsrentingaguestroomorvilla
9. Owners of resorts outside MVC exchanging into Surf Club through Interval International.
Please note: Reservations made through Interval International are completely managed and controlled by Interval International and subject to the villa and guest room deposits
made by our Owners. While we may have larger units available on a rental basis, the unit size that Interval International confirms to you may not be altered or upgraded here at the
resort. fI you would like to explore options for exchanging into a different unit, please call Interval International at 800-858-8200. Reservations made using Destination Points can only be modified by Owner Services. Please contact his number for any
There wasn’t a question of owner placement, it was where Interval exchanges fit into the mix.But this assignment order is all still based on placing you into the unit you own and/or reserved. I suppose it is also possible that a Surf Club owner exchanging back in through II could be swapped to a better view, but they don't have a whole lot of flexibility in moving views around given that the resort is highly owner occupied. It is usually just easier to keep the assigned view of the deposited unit the same as where they place the guest. The external exchange guest may just get a lesser unit within the view.
You were just lucky!
good for you!Maybe. I have had very good luck with my unit placements the last few years. BeachPlace Towers put me on the 18th Floor facing the ocean during Spring Break last year and I was ecstatic with that one! I
As a Marriott owner you rank #4 out of 9 on the list.I do think it helps being a Marriott owner exchanging in vs a non-Marriott owner exchanging in. I just secured an Aruba Surf week for my brother-in-law and his soon to be wife for their honeymoon for September. The view code is OV so we'll see what they get assigned.
