Yeah, the yahoo toolbar install seems to be attached to everything these days, including java updates. It's very easy to uninstall. I installed the ask toolbar accidentally one time the same way. Both are very easy to uninstall.

Yeah, I just went to the download site and downloaded it and installed it. It installed both 32-bit and 64-bit versions without any interaction from me. roboform doesn't have a plug in for the 64-bit version, so I use the 32-bit version of IE. I tried the 64-bit version and it seems to work fine. I wasn't sure if it was going to give me both 32-bit and 64-bit versions, but it did, just like IE7 had both versions installed on this machine as shipped from the factory.

If roboform didn't work with it, I would have uninstalled it.

I have TT, but I haven't tried it with IE8 installed. I already filed this year. What doesn't work in TT with IE8? Where did you see that? I can try it to see if it's really true if I know what to try. The IE7 compatibility mode should, in theory, take care of any quirks.

I decided to go ahead and give IE8 a try anyway. I haven't had any problems with it yet, but not sure if I like the new interface yet or not.

I had TT from a box and I tried it to see if it still worked ( already done with my taxes too) and it downloaded the newest updates with no problem.

When I downloaded IE8 the first time yesterday I did get IE7 even though the link was for 8. I downloaded it again and did get 8. I tried it and found it loaded pages more slowly than FF so I am going to stick with FF.

I downloaded IE 8 on both of my XP machines. Almost every time I try to open another tab or something tries to open in a new window, I get a message that says IE encountered a problem and has to close.

What the heck is that about! I am getting really frustrated with it. Is there a way to go back to IE 7?? :crash:

Best not to.

What did you use to post now and could you use that.?

I'm using Opera, Firefox and K-Meleon all of which are better choices than reverting.

Yes there is.
The issue you describe is exactly what happened to me on websites I trusted and had no issues with under IE7. I reverted to IE7, but don't remember exactly how. As I recall, after I uninstalled IE8 using the control panel, IE7 reappearred, but did not work correctly. I believe that I did a registry clean and reinstalled IE7.

I suggest searching the MS customer support for IE8 online to see if there is an officially sanctioned procedure to restore IE7.

BTW, our office IT person told me that she had the same issue on her home computer and reverted to IE7 for that reason. She said that, since all our office desktops (30+) were XP, she would not be installing IE8 on any of them, absent an update adressing this issue.

I'll bet you have IE7.

Do you see the little question mark icon in IE? Click it. (It's all the way on the right on the toolbar in mine, to the right of "Page", "Safety" and "Tools".) That's where the old "help" menu items are.

If it (the little question mark icon) isn't visible, click on the two little right arrows at the right edge of the toolbar to see the hidden toolbar items.

Maybe I've got IE7 configured differently, but I still have the menu bar with the Help tab visible. Help, About provides all that information. Yes I am running Vista.

Why IE will never be my primary browser

I am sticking with Firefox too. I did download IE8, since you need IE for some websites that use ActiveX, etc. I am sure the next version of Firefox will have some nifty features.

It is the completely insecure Active-X that is the undoing of IE & Outlook/OL Express. It is a security nightmare and basically opens your PC to anything the bad guys care to do. Browsers that use a secure scripting language such as Java for Firefox are a much safer choice.

Best advice for any PC owner. Whenever possible use a non-Microsoft software and only depend on MS for the basic OS. That is your best chance of having a pleasant & secure computing experience. Or simply run Linux & get far more from your hardware.

I uninstalled IE8 cause of problems with some of my websites I go to every day, it was getting to the point where I really like the "In-Privacy" in IE8 but my websites were giving me problems & getting the terrible error! When you uninstall IE8 it reverts back to IE7 ifin you had upgraded to IE8. Puter is now running like it was before IE8 was installed but it'll be awhile before I upgrade back to IE8, just like Microsoft to screw it up again! Wonder how many revisions they have this time????

I still use Firefox but I don't totally agree with Time on his "Security" issue. I know there are problems but it really depends how your puter is set-up to fight most of the bad guys trying to do you in. JMHOO!!!

Probably a stupid question, but is there a way to get either IE7 or IE8 with the old IE6 interface? That is, Menu far, Standard Links bar, Address bar? Thanks.
