I stayed there last year and it was just available in the lobby of the main building.

Powhatan has free terminals in the lobby, free WiFi in the 'Grille' resaurant lounge area, and WiFi for a fee in your room - about $7/day or $40/wk.

Internet at Powhatan

Been in four different units this year at Powhatan.

Internet is available, but you may need to move your laptop around to get the best reception. The natural place, on the desk in the MBR, is not always the best. It was last week, but another week, the best wa out back on the porch.

Few timeshare resorts offer it free yet. To do that costs hard dollars and while many people expect it now many others don't care/want it. To put another $10-$15/year into the annual fees to offer "free" access to all isn't quite palatable for most Associations today. I do agree that $39/week is on the high end I've seen for paid access but Powhatan is a BIG resort to enable and that means more than average cost to get it up and running. I can't complain if the users that want it also pay for it. Those that don't or those that have other options (like the high speed cellular plans) also don't have to pay.

I'd rather have the option of paying $39 to get it if I need/want it vs no option to have access at all.

Very few resorts have free access, and many hotels where we pay $150 or more a night charge exactly the same or greater amounts.

Sorry, but Powhatan and Greensprings (which have exactly the same rates) are just par for the course.

If you don't like it, you don't have to get it. Just go to the clubhouse each day where its free.

Perhaps I was 'harsh' in my opinion of the price. I own at Powhatan and tend to be critical of them because of the developments there in the past few years. When I bought it was a Gold Crown resort and within a year fell to unrated. Then came the large special assessments over a couple of years without any improvement in ratings. They tend to nickel and dime you with past mandatory charges for an in-room safe and local calls. Guess I am just venting.

However, I was recently in downtown San Diego and paid $20 per week for wireless in room access. My other resort in SW FL provides free in-room service. So, I know it can be done at half the price.

I think the problem is that most of the resorts let some contract company come in and set the service up for profit. So, I certainly will be walking to the club house daily when/if I stay there.

Actually, you cannot infer that "it can be done at half the price". Do you know that the $20 is covering all of the expense at that resort? Powahatan is a very spread-out resort -- they might need more physical equipment (access points, wiring, etc.) than a compact resort. What is the cost in Williamsburg vs. San Diego for the provider service? I'm sure there are many other factors that would affect the cost.

It looks like Powhattan uses a third-party to provide the service (5G Wireless), so I'm sure a portion of the cost is profit to make it worthwhile for them. I can certainly understand why a resort would contract a third-party. After all, Sunterra's core business is not to provide wireless service to customers.

$39/week is not outrageous. If it was "free", owners end up paying for it w/ their maintenance fees. Why not let the users of the service pay for the service?

Yes, it is nice when properties provide free access, but I certainly don't feel like it is something that I am entitled to.

I'll never turn down something free...
