Initial Fee [RCI Points]

A little tidbit: if you have a points account first, and then sign up for a weeks account with RCI, you don't have to pay for the weeks account. I am not sure if it works in reverse too. I have only tried the sequence I stated.
While I haven't personally tried, I have seen people on TUG claim that it doesn't work the other way around, you end up with 2 RCI accounts and have to cancel the Weeks one.

In that case, I will wait till the weeks account expires and then purchase a points unit so I can use the tried and true method.

Last minute vacations are available both in weeks and points account. It comes in two flavors:
1. Straight cash reservation no points required
2. Use your TPUs(or points) but at a reduced rate.

At this point, here is what I would recommend and some of these have already been mentioned.
1. Are you going to use your unit sometimes? Or most of the time? If yes to either, it may not be worth it to convert to points.
2. What is the MF? Is it a good points generator? There are good points generators that can be had for free. E.g Grandview 1 bedroom with 61k RCI points has a maintenance fee less than $500.
3. Stay in the resort or use it as a weeks account for now. Then decide later if it is not working for you.

The RCI staff can also tell you how TPUs your unit will get. Note this varies based on how many months is left to check in date.
If you did decide to leave it in weeks, setting it up is easy. You just need to sign up for an RCI account and then request your week to be deposited. You can do it online or over the phone.

Thank you for great and detailed answer.. I think I'm just going to sit on it for know. I planned on using the cash option on the extra vacations.. Just retired and can travel at last minute. Maint. fee if just shy of a $1000, is a one bedroom lock of in prime season. Points at just over 58,000 total and units can be split for use. Thanks again

We started out with a weeks account in 1982, then in 2010 (or so) we got a free week that had been converted to RCI points by the previous owners. We contacted RCI and gave them all our info after the new one was finally in our name. RCI said we would just pay for 1 membership (the points one I believe since it has the higher value) an gave us a points membership number so we could log into the points account on their website. We still have the weeks membership number and log in and can choose whichever account we want to log into according to which week we want to use/trade.
