I'm surrounded by ghosts. . .

I was catching up my paperwork from my Hawaii trip, and got to thinking. I'm surrounded by ghosts. They sing and dance, tell me stories, crack jokes, show me places I can never go to. and generally keep me amused. The ghosts have been building for 200 years, but they really have been surrounding me for the last 40 years or so.

(Off my rocker?)

I'm listening to a ghost right now. Greg Lake, doing one of his original hits.

How many of you stop and think about all those ghosts that modern technology has preserved - in movies, audio recording, books, and art? You may be listening to one right now. . . .

In terms of creative people who are no longer with us? Absolutely. Some of my favorite books, movies, and music are by people who are no longer alive.

But then I have to consider my own memories, of those "good old days" in my own life. Where I was at the time, what I was doing, how it felt to be in that moment. If I sit quietly and let the memories happen, I can almost hear the sounds and smell the scents of that time and place. It can be extremely vivid, and sometimes a bit unsettling.

When I was a kid, we moved a LOT. I went to 13 schools in 12 years in 5 states. I lived in no less than 27 different houses before I was 18. Then I joined the Navy and spent 20 years traveling even more. My memories are tied to where I lived, which school I attended, and quite strongly, what music was on the radio, or shows we were watching on TV. When I hear music from "back in the day," I'm immediately transported to that place and time. It can be pretty strong, and sometimes emotional. I hope I never lose those intense memories. My life back then was much more interesting.

I've got a ghost in my fridge... It runs water and drops ice.
It also likes to spill stuff and leave sticky goo on the shelves.

Time for a new fridge. :D

We thought we had a ghost in our first house. The dogs would go nuts in the middle of the night barking at what I thought was nothing. Scared the bee-gees out of us. Turned out it was an opossum that climbed into the attic.

Ah, yes. The old "Possum in the attic" trick! :D

My dogs will do that - wake from a sound sleep and bark like hell for no apparent reason. I look around, find nothing, and by the time I've settled back down, they're already asleep, the intrusion forgotten. I swear, sometimes it's a pain to have an animal who can't talk... :D

I also have a ghost who triggers the security light on our back deck.
I look out to see why the light turned on, but all I see are shadows.
