FYI I believe Marriott codes the oceanfront units on floors 1-3 as "ocean view" (due to the the trees and foliage) at their new Maui Ocean Resort towers.

I haven't heard of any OF owners getting assigned lower floors but the folks here are probably not a big enough sample size to draw any solid conclusions.

Thanks, Glorian. So, I can see real drawbacks to exchanging an OF unit.

I agree it is a flaw in the Starwood system. I would only buy OF with the intention of using it most of the time. On the given year where I wanted to go elsewhere, I'd either try to direct exchange or rent it out. I imagine you could rent it out for a tidy amount.

Thanks everyone for your responses I'll be calling SVN 8 months out. And yes, the views at Kierland are absolutely beautiful. I had a corner unit this year and woke up to a beautiful view of the golf course with the mountains in the background. It was our first time staying there since we bought the property and we were hughly impressed. LOVE LOVE LOVE this resort.

tomandrobin: I actually haven't put in for the exchange yet. I'm looking to travel to Atlantis May of 2009 so I won't be able to request until September 2008. I will let you guys know how I make out so keep your fingers crossed for me. If I can't get Atlantis we'll go to Kierland so I think I'll make my initial reservation 12 months out anyway. Oh Duh! I totally misread your travel date of 2009. Wow, you really are planning ahead, but we do the same thing. We will be calling Starwood in October at the 8 month mark, for our vacation next year. I will update this post to let you know wether we were successful or not.

Yes, please let me know if got your exchange. It's all so exciting isn't it?? I've already gotten my exchanges for 2008, we're going to Aruba in May traded my Orlando Marriott and Maui in July using Marriott Reward points. Using FF miles for Aruba, so basically I'm not out much $$ for the two trips. That's why I'm now thinking about 2009. Can't wait to see if we get Atlantis. My son went there when he got back from Iraq a couple of years ago and fell he in love with the resort. You know he'll be coming with us so I really hope to get it for him.
