What happens if I put an ongoing search for a timeshare week that I see as available as a getaway but that I cannot see as an immediate exchange option?

Has anyone ever done that?
do you get a match overnight or does the search just hang?

I'm wondering whether getaways can be had as an exchange, for example, if II has the flexibility to say, "there's a request for that week that we have as a getaway, let's give it to this person with an ongoing search instead"

Generally exchange resorts might go into getaways if II at 60 days prior if II perceives they have a lot of getaways. A developer might make some developer inventory available as both a getaway and an exchange.

II doesn't move getaway inventory to the exchange inventory even if it has excess. This would be especially true of anything in the getaway pull for $500 or over. There may be a small shot that the $300-$400 inventory might go into the exchange pool.

It never hurts to try an ongoing search but I would not count on it happening.

Sometimes you might match with an ongoing search and you might see a large bulk exchange deposit. It then disappears and the next day appears as getaways only. I've seen this happen more than once. It never seems to happen the other way where it is originally loaded as getaway and then becomes an exchange.

Isn't there quite a bit of commonality between the low-end getaways and the AC's?

The last AC I checked was chock full of the sub-$500 getaway options.

There are many resorts that are available only as a getaway and never as an exchange. If you are looking at one of these then it will never match. The reason is the contract between II and the resort only allows for a "booking" and then II receives a percentage for their commission. Even though this process is similar to a cruise II doesn't have the same programmed function where they basically buy your unit in exchange for a discount on the cruise. For an exchange to be available the unit has to be deposited but these resorts are not doing that. They want the cash price which an exchange does not provide.

Is it worth keeping II just for getaways does anyone think?

I guess it all depends if you will actually use Getaways. There can be some good deals in Getaway, though they are certainly less than they were five years ago and the prices have gone higher. I would probably keep our II membership active just for Getaways if we sold all of our weeks.

What I have seen were last minute (within a day or 2 of travel) availability at a high-end expensive resort in both getaway and II exchange - like a Marriott Hawaii week or a Four Seasons week and cost in getwaway was more than 1K. I believe they were the same week.

There are many no-membership sites that offer rentals (getaways etc...) similar to II/RCI.

Many of the secondary exchanges offer free memberships and 'vacation clubs' affiliated with military, government or other industries (fire, police, teachers too,, I think???) offer essentially the same thing with no membership.

If you have a specific resort location in mind...I'll be glad to google you some examples.
IMHO

Thanks, not qualified for military or those others , unless there is a nurse one. I either need to renew II or let it go here shortly.

No specific resort location really at this time but something in Colorado would be a possibility suppose as we could drive. We rented a couple nights in Breckenridge last summer off of the internet and paid $200/night for a really nice 2BR condo walking distance to Main Street.

Just for a quick start: (I'm not endorsing, just providing possible suggestions)

Resortime
Endless Vacation Rental
Heros vacation club (current or former police, fire, emergency responder) I'm guessing you were emer response at some point as nurse--there is an other box

These all provide access to surplus properties plus
free account at SFX
free account at DAE

etc...
cheers.

For the last 4 years or so, II promotional codes are targeted to certain accounts or ownerships. If you don't see the offer with the code in your "deals" section then it means 99.9% of the time it won't work for you.

The best thing to do is to call II and ask if there any promotions available to you.
