There are already 28 members on that group.:)

I didn't know we had a group there, I just did a random search and up came TUG.

So when did you put that up Brian? And did I miss an advertisement for it here?

one of my pet projects to get the word out on tug was to add a tug site on a variety of social networks (facebook being one)

I honestly dont recall how long ago I created that group though! Good to have you as a member! Also good to know people can find it!

I don't understand the whole Facebook/social networking thing. Probably an age thing. Can somebody tell me what Facebook and/or the TUG group there would do for me?

TIA

If all the group does is point people HERE, that would be fine. But posters being what they are, people will pose their questions on the other group, other people will answer them there rather than pointing the original poster here to TUG and information and discussion gets duplicated and fragmented all over the net.

Or, maybe it's just an age thing with me, too ...

Fern, you are right, it's an age thing :) The kids are much better at it than Cora and I are, but we manage to enjoy it.

It's been kind of fun for Cora and I since all our family and some friends are on it. So for instance last night Cora posted a video of her and my brother-in-law doing the hula together last August on a family get together at Discovery Bay in WA State. I also was chatting with my niece who is getting married next year and found out more details.

I have also become reconnected with some old friends from many years ago, which has been a nice plus.

I was just doing some searching last night and searched TUG and up came Brian's TUG group.

It was not intended to draw people away from the bbs, nor was it intended to be a participation type page.

It was created for the sole intent of informing people about TUG and directing more traffic to the site and bbs.

with an audience of tens of millions of people, that sort of free advertising is too good to pass up.

Does TUG have a MySpace page? That's where I'm sorta active (I've no intent to join Facebook...it's all becoming a bit too much!)

That's a good question.

But MySpace seems way too beyond my age group :D

Kids like it because it's very customizable, but it's a bit too much for me. Facebook IMO is simply far easier to use.

But agreed but a presence on MySpace for the same reasons Brian gave for Facebook would offer the same free advertising.

yeap...all the major social sites should have a TUG page and associated TUG INFO/advice group.

its likely under the name "tugtimeshare" as most places wont take the 3 letter word as a username.

although it would appear the myspace "market" is far younger than the facebook one...and hence doesnt get nearly the traffic.

Just to clarify, there isnt anything special on any of these pages that you wouldnt find here or on the homepage, but more friends means more popularity and more links!

Hi there, thanks for the heads up on that, I will look for it on FB, I know how to navigate FB and TUG, but that's about all, yes, it's an age thing I think, LOL. Paula

Some useless trivia about Facebook:

Facebook was launched in February 2004 by Mark Zuckenberg. He is from Harvard class of 2006. The Facebook is a social networking site which has restrictive guidelines on what is allowed and what isn’t allowed on the site. This protects it well from heavy amount of user spam. This site was initially built only for the students of Harvard who where genuinely interested in keeping track of their friends and sharing their photos, views and news with them.

How It Expanded So Fast:

Though initially the site was for Harvard people only, within a month, more than half of the Harvard was a member of Facebook. Then Zuckenberg was joined by Dustin and Moscovitz and Chris Hughes and the site expanded to Stanford, Columbia and Yale Universities too. Gradually more universities and schools started coming under its umbrella. It started accepting all users who have a university e-mail id.

Finally, the overwhelming response to Facebook forced its founders to open up the forum to all. And from September 2006, Facebook opened registration to everyone with a valid e-mail address. This invited protests from its existing user base, but Facebook stuck to its decision.

Some Attractive Features Of Facebook:

In May 2007, Facebook added a very attractive feature to its domain. It allowed free posting of classified ads by its users. This feature is known as Facebook marketplace, users can post ads on lease, rent, vehicles, property etc. in ‘Available’ or ‘Wanted’ format. In the year 2007, Facebook has already added certain other features, that of Facebook platform being a unique one. Here users are encouraged to develop applications to be used on Facebook.

The other creative features of Facebook continue to attract more and more users. The wall is a feature where users can post messages for their friends and receive messages from friends in their space on Facebook. "Gifts" is another interesting feature which allows users to send “gifts” to their friends. These gifts are small icons of novelty icons; the user is charged $1.00 per gift. There is another feature called Facebook events which is a way by which members can let their friends know about upcoming events in their community, school or college.

The Facebook follows some strict guidelines which are greatly helpful in controlling huge amount of user spam. This makes the Facebook experience even more unique and pleasant. People who simply want to keep in touch with their peers, friends and colleagues even if they are situated in different parts of the world can use this site, as it offers great features and service.

I don't really get this Facebook thing either and just signed up recently but my kids couldn't live without it...nevertheless...I am now your friend!!

Between Face book and My Space, I have both, I like My Space more. You have more freedom to customize it and play with it artistically. I will admit it is geared toward the younger crowd. Most of my contacts there are my children's friends that have kinda adopted me as their 2nd mom. Because the social network is linked it is another venue for me to stay in touch on what is going on in their lives. My Face book account is where some of my friends will post at. Again because it is a social network it is an easy way to keep up to date on what is going on in others lives that live far away. That all said--My Space gets more issues like hacking because it is addressed to a younger crowd.

I have both a Myspace and a Facebook page because my kids are all on both of them and I enjoy looking at their pages and keeping up with what their friends are doing. I joined the TUG page last night, too.

I just joined the facebook Tug Group. I like Facebook but can be confusing to learn at first.

Now I am getting finally my pics into computer with Tug Banner.....try to get them to TUG tomorrow night....

I just want to throw a Disclaimer out there for those that are just signing up on Facebook for the first time and putting TUG down as one of your friends. Which is great but be aware that it is a social network so as you add more of your personal friends and they post notes and stuff on your profile all of your TUG friends out here will be able to see them too. For some that is just fine. For some- well you know your friends best.;)

That's a great reminder Theresa - I see so many people on Facebook communicating with each other as if it's private email!!

Hi there, I joined Facebook - TUG group yesterday also, TUG is the best I have learned so much re buying our timeshare and even renting from timeshare owners and of course meeting them all every year at VDP in PV, it's great. I use FB to communicate with family in London re pictures etc. Paula, BC Canada. :)

I have just added some TUGGER friends on Facebook.

I agree that it is much different than TUG, but for us (my wife and I) it's been a fun way to connect to friends and family in Canada and other places.

Swift, is right, I do see some people post like it's a private email place, but I think that may be kids more than old timers like me. Everything we post are things we don't mind sharing.

If any one wants to add me as their friend on FB, I use my full name there, Richard Gallagher.

Enjoy! :)

Don't be so sure about that! Noam Chomsky is my friend on MySpace...and he's way older than me even! :p

Who the heck has the extra time to do this??? I can't handle all the message boards I currently belong to.

On top of that, so many of us are trying to deal with how we're going to revamp our 'new' lives, with the very different economic environment we are facing now and into the future.
