I have gone to the dark side, I can see a lot of positives in renting points.

Summary of what I posted before. Legacy week owner since 1996 with multiple traders purchased after 2010. I have never used points up until last year. Thinking of retiring and being a hands on learner I decided to rent points in 2022 for use in 2023. I learned a lot in its use. In 2023 I rented points that expire in 2024 for use in 2024. Still looking to use either at Crystal Shore, Aruba or Grande Ocean. I have a high level of confidence I will have success in putting the points to good use.

Update. one months ago I rented 2675 points for use in 2023 and today I rented 3000 points for 2023 all put to good use. I rented the points because I saw what I was looking for on MVCI and have a company for quick turnover of points. All points expire in 12/31/2023 and because of that, I got them at .60 a point. I used them for a week at the Monarch for my son. I added a day onto my week MGO reservation made last year to give me 8 days and a lower cost of flying. I also got 6 days at the Monarch that coincides with our week at the MGO for a friend that wants to join us in HHI. I learned a lot about waitlists, executive discount within 30 days, what happens to changes within 60 days and you can’t combine multiple reservations even if they are consecutive days which means you may have to change rooms.

I can see the advantage of renting points and believe in retirement I will get greater value. Based on how I vacation, I still get more value from my weeks but renting points will be a viable strategy for me.

One last point of interest (at least to me). I used my Chase Bonvoy credit card for all the point purchases and though they charged a 4% fee for credit card use, I get 6 points per dollar. In total about 37,000 bonvoy points.
Point rentals would come from owners of the points, not Marriott, so they wouldn't be coded as a Marriott purchase. How would that qualify you for the 6 points per dollar bonus? Marriott does not rent points directly...they'd prefer we buy them instead of rent them ;)

I am definitely confused. Why would a third party company give 6x points? I am wondering if you had a promo which all travel expenses give you 6X for a short period of time? I sometimes get different type of promos with my Chase and Amex Bonvoy cards.

Very odd indeed. I wonder if they can somehow code their merchant account as Marriott?? But that would be criminal.

Big picture I get it, but Marco Island and Hilton Head are both very hot and humid in the summer so this is a pleasant surprise. I decided to cancel my 1 extra day (a Saturday Courtyard view) at the MGO that added to my 7 day stay (booked using my 1 bedroom lockoff of my 3 bedroom MGC). I am going on a family cruise out of Miami celebrating my moms 94th. With 125 points less than that 1 day cancelled MGO, I booked 4 nights at Crystal Shores (Starting Sunday, island view), extending my cruise vacation. I purchased 3000 points for .60 cents per point paying 1800, I picked up 6 nights at the Monarch (garden view Sunday through Saturday for 1875 points) for 3rd week August and 4 nights at Crystal Shore (last week July, 1000 points). 10 days at 2 bedroom at quality oceanfront resorts in the summer for $1800. The way airlines now price with best prices starting 2 months out, this fits in well with last minute plans and the points cancellation policy 61 days out (meaning inventory could appear 61 days out). Not only am I learning, but it has the same fun element of a Marriott interval trader..

If a person has 2023 points that can be banked and used in 2024, they bank them and then rent them? If a person has 2024 points and they bank them, when can they points be used? that they are looking to rent?

Banked points cannot be transferred to another owner. Only way to rent those would be via securing a reservation and renting that.
