For everyone out there who told me to do it, They are all neutered now and I got the older two's teeth cleaned. Found a great New Jersey vet who did it all for $1000 including leaning their ears and post operative medications.

If you live in the New Jersey area and need surgery or dental work on your pets get in touch. I have been looking for a reasonably priced vet for years and this one is a very accomplished surgeon.

He fixes knees on dogs for $1100 which is unbelievably good for this area and he refused to work on my 11 year olds knees because Fritz is too old to benefit from the repair. I was impressed because I knew my dog was too old and most vets I have run into just want the cash and do not care about the animal.

Mamie,
I have found the complete opposite and being a lifelong dog owner, I have never found "most vets I have run into just want the cash and do not care about the animal". In fact, I have always found just the opposite. Not a bad one in my experience.
I am sorry that has been yours.
I thank God for the fine care at my local Vet and Tufts School of Veterinary Medicine in North Grafton, Ma.
Anyway, glad that your pals are all set. This should add some great quality to their lives.

I agree - have been very happy with the local vets here. Just recently had to rush my 2 daughters kittens in on a Sunday morning, one of them had to stay until Tuesday and I was really pleased with the care and the price. And the doc could not have been more helpful or kind to my 18 year old daughter (who was in tears at the time) My own vet was not in town that week - but I have always very satisfied with him also.

I have never met an unethical Vet in all my many, many years of having companion animals.

Veteranarians are special, they do it for love and dedication as I see it.
Although M.D.s are smart, I think that DVM/VMDs are brilliant as they have different species who can't tell you how they're feeling or what've they've been doing.
I tried Vet school for one year and I could not do it; the hours, the knowledge curve, etc. Also, I was in my mid 40s at the time. Also, the tuition for Vet school can be staggering. No part-time programs that I know of.

I found in most areas that a shelter or humane society have a low cost neuter/spay program. We had two rescue foster dogs this past year and I had them each "fixed" for $50 at the local clinic. It was indeed a bargain. My regular vet would have cost $250-$300.

After being raised in NJ and raising our children, dh and I moved to NC. We have the most fabulous Holistic Vet who cares much more for the dog/cat/horse etc. then the money. We took our Samoyed yesterday, for her yearly checkup rabies, etc., plus she had a bite on her back from an infected deer fly. We brought him baked roasted lemon, garlic, wine chicken, with steamed vegetables in white wine from our garden and baked sweet potatoes from the farmers market. I left the food in our cooler in the car so I could pay the bill. I took the checkbook out and his nurse said, "are you buying something?" I shook my head no, and she said "you don't have a balance today". I went out and got the chicken. Aside from the taxes, insurance etc. and Vet bills, we have saved sooo much money relocating from NJ.

i SAW A SURVEY OF vET COSTS IN THE US AND THEY ARE WORSE IN THENORTH EAST

I read a survey that found that the north eastern area of the US typically had vet bills twice as high as the rest of the country. I know rents have to be paid and rents are high in this area for just like the rest of us but You would not believe how much you can spend on an animal surgery. The time before this cleaning my dogs teeth cost me $380 each at the NYC Humane Society but they did a good job so I am not complaining. My New Vet ?Four dogs, five surgery's for $1000? Good deal.

What do you pay to have your pets teeth cleaned? It is unimportant after about 6 or 8 to have small dogs and cats cleaned routinely at least once. I lost several cats over 40 years to dental abscesses that went undetected until they had penetrated the brain cavity. Really small dogs lose their teeth very early so my Pom and my Malti-Pom both started regular dental treatment at age 6. At $100 each I can afford it for all my pets every year or two.

Our local SPCA runs a low cost spay & neuter clinic. The ironic thing is that they send these cases out to a local state-of-the-art, high tech and very expensive veterinary hospital! The hospital does the surgery and post-op care at a very reduced rate. Kudos to the hospital to help pet owners obtain this necessary service.
And to Mamie...this is great news to hear that you found an affordable local Vet that you like. You did the right thing for your beloved pets.
