Hyatt Cancelled Hawaii in August 2023 and now I have Limited Use

Hyatt Hawaii
Hello. I'm fairly new to this. I purchased a beautiful 2-bedroom Hyatt odd year week for Hawaii. I used it the first year (2021) and can say it was beautiful. Since I would not be able to use it in 2023, I was successful with renting it through Red Week for $6K. I was proud of myself. But, sadly, disaster struck in Maui, so the $6K never made its way to my bank. I placed a few calls to Hyatt and didn't seem to get anywhere. Today someone with Hyatt was clear I only have a few days to book and use my points within the next 60 days or they will be forfeited.

Now, since this is not my fault, and since the Maui resort cancelled, I don't really think this is fair. But, I'm told I have limited use points.

There's so little available and my daughter is in school and of course there's almost nothing for spring break. I hate to fly to San Antonio for three nights. And, I really don't want to pay spring break prices to fly to Reno, Key West, or Aspen. This seems very unfair. Partly my fault for not being more diligent in following up, but Hyatt hasn't been helpful.

Any advice?????? Thanks! It is sad as the assessments were $3K and I won't get to use anything. Also, they tell me that I can't book a week and try to sell it on Redweek because that is not allowed for the limited use (which became limited use because Hyatt cancelled). Any news on this?

Again, thank you.

So, it wasn't your fault, but it wasn't Hyatt's fault either. My opinion is that some larger timeshare systems were able restore some credits because there's enough developer 'slop in their systems that they can, for goodwill. It's now 2024 and you own odd year, they seem to have given you a chance to rebook for the rest of 2023 and now for the first 3+ months of 2024. Find another $6k renter, that's amazing, it's still prime season, go for it ! But don't fault Hyatt for an act of God and Government. If it were your wholly owned home in Maui that had not burned down and you couldn't get to it, who would you be faulting and wanting your money or credits back from? Feel fortunate that your condo didn't burn down and ask yourself how well you are covered by Hyatt's insurance if it had.

Sometimes it works when you flip that egg over easy and sometimes the yolk breaks. I'm very sorry for your loss of a vacation week or the astounding rental revenue you lost. I was lucky and when my timeshare 'exchange' was cancelled my small points based timeshare company also let me cancel my follow-on Big Island reservations which I had no 'points protection on. I then booked last minute stays with Wyndham on Kauai and the Big Island and even shamed American Airlines into changing my flight to Maui to a flight to Kauai at no charge which they didn't want to do because OGG was open. My back up plan had dinner in OGG and a $39 hop to Kauai on Southwest

Stick with it, if used properly you timeshare will pay off in the long run.

P.S. Aspen would probablynot have been an option.

Sorry, I am not familiar with the workings of the Hyatt system. Are you able to deposit your points or week into Interval? That was a possible solution that helped a lot of owners after the Lahaina disaster.

Technically, you cannot use LCUP points in Interval. But you can call and ask if they will let you either move them to EEE as an exception, or use them now in interval until expiration (this month) as an exception.

Once the reservation was cancelled, the points were limited but called RCUP until the actual use week last August. They could have been used then in Interval but technically not moved to EEE without an exception.

It does not hurt to ask. And if they will not make an exception, i would certainly try to book anything you can now. You can always send friends or family.

In the past they have sometimes extended the LCUP period after a problem like this, which was not your fault but not theirs either.

Sorry about your situation.

Timesharing requires a lot of advanced planning and organization. It has been 6 mos. since the fires, and unfortunately, you waited too long to verify exactly what your options were. I think you were treated fairly. I know that at the Westin, and Marriott, most people had to use the replacement points before the end of 2024.

Using a timeshare as an investment vehicle is fraught with problems like this. I don't recommend renting except as a "we can't travel" last resort.

They can (and did) change the rules at any time. If you go into timesharing assuming that rentals will not be feasible/profitable and are pleasantly surprised, great. If disaster strikes or the management company pulls the rug out, prepare for this to happen more often than you'd like.

Maybe call the Hyatt customer service, explain your plight, and ask them if they would be willing to move your points from LCUP to EEE points as a one-time exception. EEE points can be used to book other stays through Interval.
