How to override a Garmin GPS, when I live in a gated community

I cannot get my Garmin to recognize that I can get through the security gates of my neighborhood.

For 3 months now, it doesn't recognize my path home as available to take----it keeps wanting to send me to where non-residents need to go.

Any ideas?

I had the opposite problem. The Garmin GPS wanted me to take a shortcut THROUGH a gated community. So I just entered a destination close to my house and on the normal road I would take.

First World problem? My Nav System thinks my house is about 200 yds away on the same street. But since I know where I live, it doesn’t bother me.

Cheers

Yeah, as long as it gets me in the vicinity, I can find the rest of the way. This is often the case with locations in strip malls and shopping plazas. As long as it can get me far enough to see a sign for the place, all is good.

Our house doesn't exist on GPS. Our address is on an E-W street, but the actual front door is on an intersecting N-S street. It sure confuses folks who try to find us using the address. I hope the fire or paramedics have it figured out just in case.

YOu may want to try setting your home location based on GPS coordinates vs. address.

You should have a way to set a destination point using something in one of the menus based on where you currently are, which is based on GPS coordinates as dioxide 45 suggested. You could do this by parking somewhere just outside that gate and labeling it something other than home like Restricted Gate Entrance. If you need guidance once inside the gate you should be able to set up the Restricted Gate Entrance as Dest #1 and then Home as Dest #2 in the same routing. You want to pick someplace outside the gate, otherwise you won't override the way the unit wants to take you.

We have visited some friends in a development in FL and there are multiple restricted gates we can get out, but only one that we can drive in through, so I have had to do this to force me to the friendly gate.

We have the problem that any system leads drivers to subdivision back gate which is only accessible to owners with decal on car. It will direct drivers right past the entrance to the back gate. We get a lot of calls from people who can’t get into the subdivision

Some gated communities are on lakes and have just the one manned access point for visitors which is often miles from the final destination. Our DD had a cabin that was miles closer to the back gate of Hideaway Hills OH so we would have her meet us to open the gate when we arrived. Same thing with friends who lived on Lake Mohawk OH, although usually we came from the north and entered via the guardhouse. Unfortunately the one time we came in from the south was after a long drive from Columbia SC and Missy our GPS had directed us to the back gate via narrow country roads in the pitch black-thank goodness our friends came to rescue us!

One tip regarding using a GPS to "go home" is to not have Home as a favorite in case the GPS would fall into the hands of nefarious folk who would then know that nobody was Home so the coast would be clear for crime!

Would that direct me to go towards/ through restricted gates?
It may just route you differently.

We had a similar issue last night leaving WDW Magic Kingdom. Our Garmin kept wanting us to turn left then right. Problem was that the left was into a row of polls that were sticking up. These were former service entrances that were blocked off years ago because it was too easy for people to sneak in and avoid the parking fees. We knew enough to keep driving and soon enough the Garmin would recalculate to get us where we needed to go. You can never rely on a GPS 100% of the time. Use it to get close enough to where you can find your own way.

Very good idea. I never set up "Home" as my physical home address but at an intersection near my house. Like another comment it should be set close to your home as you do know where you live. If you doing your address just so you can see the correct distance then set it for a quarter of a mile away from your house and remember to add if you need to know the exact distance.

You can also not set home and setup your home address under a different name like "Jim & Paulas", as long as you know what to select for "Home" then all is good.

When in town, I'll tell my GPS:
"Recalculate all you want, honey. I know my way home from here."

Yeah, I don't need to be routed to my driveway so I guess I'm puzzled as to why this is an issue. But, people want what they want, and that's cool by me.

"Home" on my Garmin routes to a vacant shopping center miles from actual home.

I live in two gated areas and I do not even know if it would be a problem or not as one is only one way to get there and the other is two ways but in different directions. Not really an issue. I just with waze would stop telling me directions within reason around my house.

I called Garmin today---the rep said no way to do it.

My wife's I-phone has already recognized her 'path' is through a restricted gate---but apparently a Garmin will never do the same thing.

Hope you had fun!! I wish I were at the MK right now!!

In Tampa, our GPS took us close, but put us on
the wrong road to... the Ikea parking lot. Arrrgh.

Like others I set my home destination for a close by intersection. Maybe you can set the home as the gate you want to use?
