Since I saw the mouse thread.. I figured I'd start one about cats.

Yes, I know.. get a dog!!

Other than that.. we have cats or a cat, not sure. That likes to use our side yard for his bathroom. It's completely gravel.. so they don't dig and don't bury.
Its in the pathway to my storage sheds.

It smells and I don't want to keep picking up after other people pets?

Any ideas? As much as I don't like cats.. I don't really want to hurt them.. :deadhorse:

It's as close to a cat as I could find.

My neighbor keeps outside cats, and I'd like to get rid of them also.

I think the only way would be to trap them and give them to the humane society, if they are feral cats. The humane society or your local animal control might supply the humane traps. They did it for me one time when I was still living on Kauai.

Do they make cat-away spray like dog-away? You could spray the perimeter of your property with something they don't like. Maybe a good garden shop has something that will smell like a predator?

It doesn't really work. We had neighbors who let their cat run. I used several products to discourage the cat from entering our yard including running an electric wire along the top rail of our wooden fence. Discussions with the neighbor didn't do anything to stop the problem either. If I didn't have a problem killing someone's pet that was allowed to run loose I'd have taken care of the situation long ago. Fortunately, they finally moved.

In another neighborhood that we lived in, we had a neighbor who fed cats but really didn't keep them. They caused a lot of issues in the neighborhood. We contacted the humane society and they brought out a live catch trap. When we caught one, we'd call them and they'd take it away. It worked well enough that we purchased a second trap to take care of the problem twice as fast. It took awhile but we eventually made enough of a dent in the cat population to make things more tolerable. Of note, if the cat had a collar and tag, the humane society would not take the cat.

Thanks for the replies.. the motion sensing sprinkler looks pretty good, except
I can never seem to hook a hose to anything without it leaking.

They also poop in my front grass.. what happened to cats digging in soft soil?
I guess they are getting fat and lazy like there owners.

The pee is funny.. who collects that stuff? I'd like something I don;t have to go back and keep up with.

I know if I trapped them, it'd be midnight and they'd be making all kinds of noise.

During the winter, I have my patio furniture on the side of my house, covered with tarps. Of course a cat family moved in and had babies.

I think I'm the safe haven for cats, since I'm the only one around without a dog. Maybe I should put a doggy door in my fence, so the neighbors dog can roam my yard.

You need to use plumber's tape. It's a white non-sticky plastic tape that you wrap around the thread of the male end of the hose or faucet before connecting the female end. It works great and is cheap.

Be careful when you shoot or trap cats with white stripes. My buddy traped one of these and now has a great trapping story.

Get some cheap black pepper and spread it over the gravel area.

No permanent harm and the cat will get the idea.

One other thought, if you can find out who has cats in your neighborhood that allows them to roam, collect the cat droppings and re-deposit them in those yards for them to deal with. If you really brave you can put them in a brown paper bag soaked with a little lighter fluid, set it on the front porch, ring the door bell and run. Maybe leave a little note that you were tired of stepping in their cats trailings so you thought they might enjoy dancing on them for a few minutes. ;)

If you can't lick em....Just say you are whipped.

Give up and learn to love cats. Get your own. They are teritorial and will police your area for other cats.

Try to find a copy of "How To Kill Your Girlfriends Cat", by Dr. Robert Daphne. You might get some ideas.
P.S. Don't get alarmed, It's a joke book.
Here's an example which I adapted to fit your situation.
Post this notice in your neighborhood.

Methodology out here in the country is a lot faster and cheaper than in the city.
