How Television Won the Internet - by Michael Wolff/ The Opinion Pages/ Op-Ed Contributor/ International New York Times/ The New York Times/ nytimes.com

"RUPERT MURDOCH recently appointed his son James chief executive of 21st Century Fox, prompting the obvious question: How can a guy whose main credential is a silver spoon compete with Silicon Valley's meritocratic coders and entrepreneurs?

I suggested that disconnect in a testy interview with James several years ago, when he was running his father's satellite broadcasting company, BSkyB. "You must be incredibly stupid," he said with trademark Murdoch dismissiveness. "Look around you, man. It's television!"

Supremely confident that the Murdochs were old-media toast, I looked around, and it was in fact perplexing that BSkyB had, despite the Internet, become a colossus " one of the biggest businesses in Europe..."

So true. A fact from the National Broadcasters Association. Revenue from television ad sales, etc.= $167 Billion in 2014. Revenue from TV online-social-etc. sales $5 Billion. All the Mensa think tanks were wrong. TV is very much alive and profitable.

Where did you get those numbers? $5 billion seems low for online advertising. Google probably makes that in a month.

Every television/media station and network has an online channel and social media sites. = $5 billion total revenue in 2014. The cost of running the sites and the staff and content put on those sites does not return. Its considered research money. Media company's are laying off their 'digital' staffs, look at the NY Times, Disney as an example. Google Amazon are not media companies.
