How often is your timeshare unused?

Be honest. How often has your timeshare been completely unused?

Secondly, how often is it used but only reluctantly by forcing yourself to use it or by giving it away to friends and family at the last moment?

TUG folks are probably savvy and keep the occupancy rate high. I'd like to think I'm in this category too. But I admit, I've had to take losses on some reservations and I'm made some last minute giveaways.

When you travel during the off-season, you will see that many resorts are half empty or more. Some of this may be due to unpaid MFs, but I think most of it are from owners that make payments but are unable to use or rent their units.

Are there any statistics about this that someone could share with us?

I believe part of it is also due to peeps owning those off weeks giving them to an exchange company and that company not getting any takers for the weeks.

When I first started timesharing I had to let two exchanges expire but now with the help of the internet none will go empty again.

and in a points system like Wyndham which is nothing but its own internal exchange system, a person can own at a resort and pay their maintenance fees to that resort, but never stay there. Not to mention the complications that arise in a system (like Wyndham) that allows borrowing and banking

Complication or benefit since 1988 been to our home resort once has never been complicated

Only twice in the past 10 years. Once because of family emergency and once because rental fell through.

Never. Three months in Steamboat, and one week each in London (Allen House, alas now gone) and Raintree and a Quarter Share in Steamboat Grand that usually pays for itself and I never personally use. :D

Cheers

Never unused, never forced to use, never given away. Paying MFs is my best motivation to use.

I've never rented my unit out, and never let any points expire. We are in "perfect balance" on the number of points that we own. Probably the only time that I have ever wasted points was when we booked a 2 bedroom, but the person with the second bedroom ended up with another commitment. We tried to find someone to go with us, but couldn't.

Right now for the first time I am not using the first 3 nights of my Marriott Kauai Beach Club which started Friday not arriving until tomorrow- Monday.

Only twice in the first years I owned. I think I was overwhelmed by the details and didn't fully understand the potential. Now almost 20 years later, thanks to TUG and the now disbanded Fairfield/Wyndham Yahoo group - I've enjoyed vacations in the U.S. and the UK. and sent my daughter and her friends on some too.

Never. Always used our weeks in the 16 years of ownership.

We have always used our weeks, or let the kids ( adult ) use them. Sometimes we leave a day or two early, if we stay near family we let them use the rest of the week. We used to go with Mum to her timeshare, never just used it. But she is too frail now and my brother bought the week and let his daughter use it for her honeymoon. We have exchanged more than stayed at home resorts. And next year we are exchanging and renting thru TUG Marketplace. New Experience, but looking forward to some fun times ahead! DH is very good traveling companion, he goes where ever and has a great time. I like handling the details, he is good at navigation. We love Timesharing!

Never (5 1/2 weeks since 2006-2007). Either used or rented.

Never. Always bank or use our weeks. Have owned since 1993. Love planning and our travels. Had to leave a unit early one time due to illness in family.

More times then I would like. Maybe 15 weeks a year if I were to add it up. I am not interested in renting my reservations for peanuts.

A few times in the past five years, and we've been timesharing for about 15. Always due to hubby's illness, twice in the past five years where they were emergency situations, and I've just let one Interval deposit lapse because of his failing health.

I must say that RCI is a much better system to just keep rolling forward. I have gotten rid of my timeshares in the last 12 months and have TPUs that I can keep combining and rolling forward until 2019 or so. My kids are whittling away at them.

Thankfully never. We have three weeks at Marriott resorts, which we can't use every year, but I take points every other year on two of them, use one most years, and where there's a gap I either reserve and deposit in II or rent out (I do that through eBay). The closest I've come to nonuse were late deposits to II which gives me crappy trade power (no more than 60 days in advance).

Once this year for the first time. My adult daughter booked a week in Vegas and 3 weeks prior asked me to cancel it. She lost her exchange fee and my points expired after recovering them.

never since i started timesharing 10 years ago. but i was careful to start slow...

Once in a great while if something weird happens during the year. But we usually bank for later and take more people with us on the next vacation.

Never, although once I did have 9 DVC points expire because they were outside the banking deadline and I was too borrowed out to add to them to get a res. I needed 2 more points:mad: That was my own fault for poor planning tho.

All the timeshares we have we bought for trading with the exception of DVC (our first timeshare). I trade them all way in advance usually.

Club Intrawest reservations - never gone unused. However, when we trade through II for a week somewhere, more often than not we don't stay the whole week. I'd say on average we use 5 of the 7 nights.

The only time I had a Week go unused was a result of my policy to abort trips if I was unable to get reasonable a air fare or car rental. Because the Week was at an Independent HOA Controlled Resort with a MF of less than $500 I felt comfortable doing this.
