What should you pay to rent CA coast

How much should one expect to pay for a timeshare rental on the CA coast in July or August for a 2 to 3 br.

I don't know the answer, but I would look at similar weeks listed on TUG and redweek.com for comps. WHICH resort it is also makes a great deal of difference.

Depends on the resort. Marriott starts around 2k for July & Aug.
Look on TUGs classified, My Resort Network, & Red Week.

Most of these ads show the asking price, but I assume that's not usually what is actually agreed to, so I wanted to know what one might actually have to pay, not what people were asking. Other than ebay confirmed transactions, is there another place to see the actual agreed to price of rentals.

On rentals, I think the actual price is very close to the asking price - unlike resales. I've never received less than my asking price on a rental. So on the websites, I'd look at the lowest asking price for a similar week at the same resort.

Redweek pretty close to mark

I've rented a So Cal 2 bed Aug week on Redweek- Price rented was price listed. I think my price as a little on the low side. (My youngest this past Aug was not yet 3 yrs old and making that drive from SF area alone with 3 kids was not going to happen...)

Actually, I think there are some (brokers) that keep on ads with artificially low prices to get you to contact them--so broker can maybe book you into another week or resort.

As for ebay rentals---bargain city. No where near normal rental pricing. Also, its just to spotty to depend on for specific times and locations. Although it seems like I'm seeing more ebay rentals lately??

CA Coastal rentals are high $. AND, it does depend on what you want.
You can get a 1 bedroom unit at the San Clemente Inn that sleeps 6 during that time for $900, but it's 2.5 star accommodations.
You could get a Marriott in Newport Beach or an Aviara in Carlsbad for about $3K.
You could get a 1 bedroom unit at a place like the Carlsbad Inn, Carlsbad Seapointe or the Southern Cal Beach Club, and do what many do-- cram in 6. You can get this for about $1400, and the accommodations would be 4-5 star.
Proximity to the beach also has an impact on rental costs.

I just read the Travelodge in Santa Monica on Ocean Avenue, very near the SM Pier agreed to have it's average room rate affordable for one year in exchage for some changes and additions they want permission from the city to make. Affordable for this year was = $179 night by the agreement.

Don't forget that when looking at the rental costs, that the mfs for many of these resorts tend to be fairly high. (In my experience, high for California, and really, really high in comparison to other areas of the US.)
