Back in the Y2K prep days, I bought some Yoders canned meat.

Being a pack rat, I still have it.

Rules of the game - The can is not bulging or leaking, but is 20 years old.

How hungry would you have to be to:
  1. Open it
  2. Smell it
  3. Eat it

I cann't find any reference but I remember an old outward bound survival program. They would abandon people for 5 days to eat off the land. They would show them what disgusting stuff was safe to eat. By day three almost everyone was eating bugs and other disgusting stuff that was in fact viable food. So I will guess I would be two days (I will try anything) before I devour it sans obvious danger.

I think that canned meat would taste great if I haven't had anything to eat for a week. I probably wouldn't last a week, maybe 4-5 days. It's amazing how good food taste after not having any.

When we bought it, I tried a few cans. The canned hamburger looked disgusting cold out of the can. Like dog food. But as you heat it up, it smells really good. It is quite salty, so yo have to adjust your recipe and possibly rinse it.

And what about lobster thermidor??

The only thing I know about Lobster Thermidor is an old story. My dad used to take our family out to eat once a year. It was always the same local family restaurant on the south side of Chicago where we lived. We had a big family so we did really go out to eat at all. This is late 60’s into the early 70’s. Every year when he got his raise he took us out and we all got to order what we wanted.

I ordered the chicken every time because I loved fried chicken. We my older brother decided he was going to order the Lobster Thermidor. It was the most expensive thing on the menu. I still remember my dad looking over at him when he ordered that. I thought he was going to kill him. But he didn’t, he let him order it. Decades later we would bring that up and it still made everyone laugh.

I was sure the question was how hungry would you have to be to eat a bat -- or is that implied?

See, over there, that is not especially uncommon. People eat all sorts of things Westerners wouldn't think of eating. It's a cultural difference, that in this case, ran afoul of good sense.

We in the United States are a bless nation to have food chains groceries stores liked Costco, Kroger, Food Lions, WalMart, Targets stores & other small grocery stores in every city, town and community that carry fresh meats, vegetables and other stable items every day on the grocery shelf. IMHO.

Last Sunday I canned 16 pints and 7 quarts of hamburger in beef bullion. The recipe calls for browning the burger before canning so most of the fat is removed before the meat goes into the jars. When the jar is opened most of the fat that is left is on top and can be scooped out. The kids and grandkids like this canned burger better than fresh. I think its the bullion flavor. Same thing for the chicken breast I can regarding reducing the fat. There isn't much fat in chicken breast but there is even less after pressure canning.

Pretty soon the asparagus is ready to pickle. yum
