How does the HGVC Website do Borrowing points?

Hi all, I am looking to make a reservation in 2025 that requires more points than I have. The website gives me a series of messages, but I am scared to complete the booking because I do not understand where the points are coming from and which home week it might jeopardize. I own at Marbrisa and Oahu.

How do I tell where the points are being taken from?

Background info:
I own are Grand Waikikian on Oahu and Marbrisa in Carlsbad

When I first click on the dates to book, I get a pop up that says “Requires Borrowing and/or Saving points”

I click book now

And then another window comes up

“Borrow 2026 Points (40,160 available)
You will Borrow 2026 Points for this Transaction
2,738 Points

This transaction may cause your 2026 Home Week to become unavailable.”

I want to use / borrow Marbrisa 2026 points and keep my Oahu 2026 home week if possible. But I do not see how to make that work safely?

So I decide to post on TUG rather than complete the booking

You can book homeweek from either one as long as you have full points to cover them

When doing a club reservation with points, the system will automatically borrow from the next year if you need more points. If you cancel the reservation, the points will go back to their respective buckets.

What the others wrote. But to further clarify, HGV’s systems do not currently distinguish between the points from different HGVC deeds (though bHC is a separate bucket).

HGVC it is better to borrow, as it is free. It costs to save, so always be in a borrow situation if possible.

As a caveat, I will say Marbrisa is a fixed week, so I cancel the week and get points to spend.

Yes, points will go back from where they came. If you look at a reservation, you will see where the points are drawn from:

I always thought that January 1, 2025, meant I could then borrow into 2026!!! Have I been wrong all this time?

You don't need to wait until Jan 1, 2025 to borrow from 2026. Your reservation needs to be in 2025 to use 2026 points but you can make that reservation in 2024.

I am very guilty of planning at the last minute, so I look for stays in the moment or a few months in advance at most.

Some of this has been due in part to my not knowing such an important concept:
Book in 2024 for a 2025 stay using 2026 points.

I must wrap my head around this year-round—it changes everything. I need a cool table or XLS cheat sheet, and of course, I need to plan ahead more.

I already have my next 2 years of points (and into 2027) accounted for. We know where our 2025 points will be used and have a good idea where we are going for 2026 (we will need a few 2027 points for the 2026 trip). I don't use a spreadsheet, but we don't have the points others here do.

One thing our ownership did is it got us in the habit of talking about our trips, planning them early and making our reservations. Before, we would talk about our vacations just before we took them (if we went at all). My entire family looks forward to them and we plan them together. As our family grows with our children getting married, the space really helps bring everyone together. We got to know our now son-n-law by taking him on trips with us. It's his own fault he didn't go running away from us after the first one.

Plus, if you aren't a status that allows you to save for free, it helps to always borrow then it isn't an issue

Form us, this is true with our bHC points, since these are New York and we use them there. The same is true for our DVC points - already spoken for 2025 and concepts for 2026.

For our regular HGVC points, we have more than we use normally, so we fill in some stuff as we go.
