How does one get to HGV Elite Status?

Recently bought a property in Florida and didn't realize they have tiers for points and benefits (currently at their "Standard"). The one thing that isn't clear to me is how does one get Elite and beyond status? Do I have to swap out leases? Buy my way into upper tiers while holding onto my current property?

Welcome to TUG. What resort did you buy in Florida? Generally if you bought from the developer in Florida it counts toward Elite. The more points you buy the more you reach thresholds for Elite Tiers. If you bought Florida Gulf Property, those count toward Elite tiers as well AFAIK.

Check the reference guide for more information about elite but below are the list of resorts where you need to buy from for them to count, typically a retail/developer purchase.

If you are seriously considering elite my suggestion is to slow way down. Take some vacations, learn how to maximize what you have and decide if HGV really works for you. If me suggesting to you to slow down doesn’t do it for you, consider the cost to get to the elite level. For the first tier of elite you would be looking at 22,400 points. I have no idea what you purchased but let’s say you purchased 11.200 points for $50,000. You would need to do another $50,000 purchase to get to the basic, first tier elite. You would also have at that point two maintenance fees, which may not be too bad for platinum deeds. What you don’t want to end up with is four or five gold or silver deeds totaling up to 22,400 points. Doing that would mean 4-5 maintenance fees.

Word. I almost did a $60k+ developer/retail purchase right off the blocks as a first buy because I thought it best to get elite "Go big or Go home". I'm so glad I cooled my heels and did some research first, and stayed at a few properties over 18 months to figure out HGVC would fit into my overall vacation plans.

Exactly. Looking at ROI, it would take 50 or 100 years for the total value of Elite benefits to surpass the price spent to obtain them. Plan a long life for that.

depending on how you get them.....I have paid less than many who aren't Elite...and we are EP.

Huh so I've got a 2BR in Parc Soleil but I only qualified for the standard points and membership. I've got a picture of the tiers but I can't seem to upload here unfortunately. I'm so very confused.

You would need to buy several more properties. IMO base Elite is not worth much. Elite Plus and Premier are more interesting if you travel a lot in HGVC timeshares. If you don't plan to, then not worth it.

here are the tiers and the benefits but remember, Parc Soleil would only count in these tiers if you bought it directly from Hilton, not a resale:

So, think about what you paid for that and multiply it out to see what it would end up costing you. Like others have said, it isn't worth that cost. There are cheaper ways to do it but there is risk involved.

The going developer retail rate is around 5/pt so that would be ~ $270K in order to reach elite premier level.

isn't that what you paid for it? :)

In this case, I'd like to correct myself:

Exactly. Looking at ROI, it would take 50 or 100 440 years for the total value of Elite benefits to surpass the price spent to obtain them. Plan an even longer life for that.

actually, I just thought of something. If you just bought a retail Parc, then you are in Max, not HGVClub Legacy and you can't join Elite. New owners are automatically in Max and your points count toward Max Tiers. Only prior owners and resale buyers are in Legacy now and most resale do not count toward elite so the elite pool of people will dwindle over time.

The OP didn't say when they bought. If they bought before April, they have the choice of joining Max. If they bought before Jan 14, They are legacy until they purchase from the developer or the ala carte if it ever is released.

That is true but, if they buy a developer again, they will be in Max. All new people will be in Max so the Legacy pool will be existing or new resale owners only who never upgrade. The elite subset of those owners will diminish over time so maybe that is the thought by HGV. They don't need to eliminate the Elite program, it will eventually go away on its own....except the few that hold out. This is us...:)

I bought after April so that means I was put into Max. So that explains why I wasn't in Elite for purchasing Parc. Then how does one increase their points? They showed me a tier list showing that you can increase your points and when I asked how I could increase my points they weren't particularly clear as to how other than swapping out my existing lease with another one. So do I have to swap out leases for a place that increases my points or do I have to purchase points?

With just a Parc purchase you wouldn't have been in elite anyway. The lowest Elite level starts at 22,400 points. Now you are in Max Tiers and at the Member level unless you have more than 17k points.

The only way to get points is by buying a deeded week. Deeded weeks have different values based on resort, size and season. Your recently purchased week was a deed that had a corresponding value of 11,200 points. There are some deeded weeks, primarily Hawaii, that have more points attached, such as a 3 bdm platinum worth up to 36,800 points. Buying that direct however would likely cost you upwards of $175,000, if not even more. You could “trade” your existing deeded week for another but HGV will still extract tens of thousands of dollars from you.

How many deeds you end up with buying direct to get elite will end up costing significantly more than the value of elite. If you have the money, and don’t mind paying tens of thousands or even hundreds of thousands of dollars for something that would be worth maybe 20%-30% of what you paid immediately after signing, then that is a decision only you can make.

doesn't matter though...he is max so can't get to elite but the same is true there. You need developer weeks to count toward Max Tiers. What is still up in the air is how it will work if someone has both Max and Legacy....i.e. buy into Max but then buy a resale or have resale and upgrade one or have resale and buy another retail deed....that division of point buckets is still a mystery. We know what HGV has told us but need to see real world to understand it.
