How do I address pilfering at work?

Sounds like this is a small operation...

Take a look at the mini vending machines at Sam's Club or Costco. They are not too expensive. Charge enough to pay for them within a year. They sell them for food and drinks.

Is the money locked up at night? One of the offices I worked in had what at first was thought to be a similar problem. Less money coming in than drinks and snacks going out. It turned out that one of the security people who patrolled the buildings at night was helping themselves out of the money jar. A video camera and some dye caught them red handed.

How about sharing the responsibility - your time is valuable too.

Set-up a rotating schedule for each month with other volunteers taking turns supplying the snacks.

You will look good and get kudos for organization and management.

I'm with the 'friendly reminder' club. Sometimes people do forget and figure they'll catch up next time.

Guess I'm puzzled as to why a company with employees working zillions of hours at high rates won't pony up to stock the kitchen out of firm funds.

I would put up the friendly note. Also say, I have put say 125.00 of my own money into coffee and snacks. I will do it no more. I would take the money owed to me. This is not worth the trouble. I have found out we live in a different world then years ago.

We have just the opposite situation at the facility that I work at.

The lab that I work in has a small fridge that we have soda and waters in and a coffee pot. We sell the beverages for only slightly over cost.

Over the course of a year, we now have a $500 profit.

We have been able to purchase a newer, nicer coffee pot and have been able to buy food for the lab out of the profits.

Apparently engineers are more honest, or forget and double pay, than their attorney counterparts.

I'm sorry but I've never worked at place that had an honor system for snacks when people are working 60 to 80 hours a week. I work at CPA firm and during tax season our kitchen is fullly stocked. Nobody ever goes hungry that is the last thing we want. We have oatmeal, granola bars, pop tarts, cereal, top ramen, cans of soup, tuna packets with the crackers, mayo; instant meals like the black beans in rice (they are sold near the soup section), candy, cookies, tea, coffee, hot chocolate, etc... You name it we got it. I'm really surprise your firm would cut out such a cheap investment to keep employees happy. So, either they have already done this and discovered the employees abuse the system or they just don't care.

I think, you have done more than your fair share. I'd send out an e-mail to see if people pay up and if they don't then, stop or only buy with what money you made. Good luck!
