How did Erwin Rommel Earn the Nickname 'Desert Fox'?

We should be glad Hilter sent Rommel to North Africa and not to Europe to be in charge .

Actually, Rommel was in command on the French coast during D-Day and if Hitler has listened to him, D-Day might have turned out differently. The allies were constantly benefitting from Hitler overruling his generals.

Eisenhower created a paper army headed by Patton to make the Germans think the attack would be around Calais, father south. Rommel saw through the ruse and in a meeting between generals and Hitler a few days before D-Day, Rommel requested that the German panzer reserves be shifted northward where they could be quickly deployed at Normandy to push the allies back into the sea. Rommel correctly predicted that Normandy was where the invasion would occur. Hitler cited a fortune teller for his belief that the invasion would be around Calais and kept his armored reserves too far away to be much use at the critical time at Normandy.

It is also interesting that both Rommel and Patton studied the campaigns of Confederate cavalry General Nathan Bedford Forrest in the War Between the States and applied them to modern armored tactics. One of Forrest's sayings was that "artillery was meant to be captured". It was not that he wanted it captured, but realized it had much more impact if fought in forward positions where it was more prone to capture. Rommel used this same tactic, learned from General Forrest, in north Africa.
