How are RCI ratings established?

I recently asked at a resort how often RCI visited the resort to upgrade the ratings and was told that RCI did nothing to create the ratings. I was told the Gold/Silver/etc. was arrived at by the ratings submitted on comment cards or input to RCI online.

Is that correct? For some reason, maybe because I have a little "Hotel" background in me, I assumed that there RCI reviewed the resorts on a somewhat regular basis and created ratings much like the hotel industry.

Thanks,

BigTom

They assign any ranking when a resort is new but after a few years its all based on the comment cards (in RCI). That's why it is so tough to assure any resort will remain ranked or unranked when you really are at the mercy of the ever so fickle public. In general RCI rankings for resorts over 5 years old are at least a fair guide to what you can expect to find.

Now II is more hands on. They decide if they have an interest in a big developer or not. If they do then basically any converted motel that developer offers up will be ranked - to h*ll with what the traveling public might say. All politics with II. That's how highly deserving DVC/Marriott resorts (and some not so deserving) can have the same high ranking as the totally undeserving Wastegate rat piles. If there were any fair ranking going on Wastegate would have lost theirs years ago. But they are a big II supporter so plan on seeing the Golden Mango or Coconut or whatever they are using now next to every run down Wastegate in the book. Don't depend on II rankings to mean anything.

We've gone on several WestGate timeshare tours (for the freebies, mainly) without noticing the run-down character of the resorts.

Consistently, however, all the WestGate timeshare sellers knocked RCI & talked up I-I as the greatest thing since pop-top pepsi.
