Hotels near transportation in NJ

We are heading up to NYC for LAbor Day weekend. We are taking the train from Baltimore. WE would like to find a hotel in New Jersey that is convenient to public transportation so that we can get quickly into the city.

We aren't staying in the city as we need 2 hotel rooms - which , for 3 nights, adds up to a whopping $1500 in hotel for a long weekend. Ouch!

Does anyone know of a hotel that is near NJ Transit or Path or the Bus line into Manhattan?

I would look at the verizon.com online yellow pages for Secaucus, NJ. There must be a dozen hotels there. The Days Inn is fairly affordable, nice, and has a NJ Transit bus stop outside for service to the 42nd St. and 9th Avenue Bus Terminal. Its about a 10-15 minute bus ride.

I like the Hyatt in Jersey City ... right next door to a PATH station (about 5 minutes to the World Trade Center, or one quick switch to the 33rd St line). Also, it's within walking distance of a ferry and about a block from a light rail station.

You can switch from the train to the Path at Newark Penn Station and it will take you right to the hotel.

There's also a Sheraton Suites at Lincoln Harbor (Weehawken, right by the Lincoln Tunnel). It's not as nice as the Hyatt, but it's not terrible. There's a ferry right there, but I'm not sure if it runs on weekends (check www.NYwaterway.com for the ferry schedule to Lincoln Harbor).

If the ferry's not running, it's just a 3-4 minute walk to the last NJ bus stop (frequent service on the Hoboken Bus #126) into Port Authority. When the tunnel traffic is light (most weekends), the bus would be at Port Authority in about 7-8 minutes.

It's also just a 5 minute or so walk to a light rail station that would take you to the Hoboken Path station (but the bus would be quicker 99% of the time).

The Marriott at Newark Airport would work as there is good transportation from the airport to the city and the hotel runs a shuttle to the terminal where you can take the train in.
The Marriott can be expensive though.

Thanks for all of the great advice! We found a Marriott in Secaucus that has a bus stop right outside the front entrance!

Appreciate all of the help,

Janis
