In the hotel systems (Starwood, Marriott, Hilton) the resorts are generally a step up in quality---though not universally. Wyndham has more diversity in locations. If you are considering a Wyndham purchase, it is worth renting a stay in a few to see how you like them. If they meet your expectations of quality, the wider set of options may pay off.
Of these I would only rate Marriott as consistently higher "quality". They all have some very nice units, but so does Wyndham, especially in newer resorts with Presidential units. Wyndham does offer a nice set of locations, especially on the east coast and certain urban areas (San Fran, DC, NY, Chicago, New Orleans, etc.)
I think it's good advice to check out and "try before you buy". You may even like the flexibility so much of renting at lower cost than the maintenance fees would cost you - that you decide not to own at all.
With renting... What is the risk of renting from a spammer and then being left without a reservation when you get there? How would you protect yourself from that? I'm sure there are benefits to renting but the idea of risking a family vacation to save a few bucks seems counter intuitive...
And you have been on TUG for 2.5+ years? Try the TUG Marketplace or Redweek.com. If a TUGGER, you can figure out REAL QUICK how long they have been around and their reputation. Plus, some of the biggest Wyndham renters are VERY EASY to figure out ... just read the Wyndham thread and PM them ... or they may already of PM'ed you.
Plus, there is a TUG Sticky on HOW to tell is a rental is for real ....

What? Marriott is "consistently" providing a higher quality product than Starwood, Hilton, or Hyatt, etc? Have you been to some of the older Marriott's? If not, I think a visit to them would change your mind...
And, you then mean that Starwood and others are the same as Wyndham? You didn't mean that, did you? I've been slowly looking into Wyndham as a means to stay in new places, but I *highly* doubt any of them would come close to the Starwood, Marriott (many, but not all), Hyatt, or Hilton properties.

Having owned both Wyndham and Starwood and staying in Marriottt, only the Wyndham presidential units are going to come close to Starwood or Marriott quality. Wyndham has them beat on number of locations.
Wyndham presidential at Smuggs is not equal to Westin Cancun or HRA.Having owned both Wyndham and Starwood and staying in Marriottt, only the Wyndham presidential units are going to come close to Starwood or Marriott quality. Wyndham has them beat on number of locations.
#1 is Sheraton Vistana Villages and #2 is Wyndham Bali Hai.

Not sure what you're comparing to. But you can check out some youtube video tours of presidential units at Wyndhams for comparison. (I've posted some myself).
And yes, I think Wyndham's Presidential units slot in with the others named. Perhaps you're not familiar with them? They are a far cry from the older Fairfield resorts.
If you're happy with the others, then by all means stick with then and don't check out Wyndham.

Actually, your original response was:
Thanks for clarifying your point that only the presidential units are comparable. I'm here to learn and I know little about Wyndham so far, and this is yet another item to investigate. But, it does seem these have high point redemptions, right? Like the OP, I'm looking for value and quality, not just quality. I'm not sure what the nightly/weekly cost would be at a presidential unit yet...what would you suggest as the best method for obtaining these units at the lowest MF?

Presidential units are generally the cost of the next size up unit. So a 1BR Presidential unit is generally the same number of points as a 2BR Deluxe at the same resort. I'm a VIP Owner so I upgrade into Presidential units and don't pay the extra point cost.
It might make sense to try renting first, to see what you could get at reasonable cost.

How to verify that a rental is Legit: http://www.tugbbs.com/forums/showthread.php?t=109479Never considered renting. And if so, it would be on the hotel timeshare side as I already have Wyndham. Everybody hears horror stories so I just want to k own how to do it properly, and if it is worth going that route
I own Wyndham and Starwood, and my favorite timeshare is a Wyndham resort.
BUT - overall Starwood has very consistent quality, and Wyndham is all over the place.
No offense, but stating that the presidential units are comparable to the hotel bases resort systems, is a bit misleading, because only a tiny portion of availability is in that category, and many resorts do not have Presidential units at all.
