Going on a cruise in Jan which leaves from SJU. Arriving the day before departure so I need a hotel room. What area/hotels do you recommend?

Pat, If you want an ordinary hotel room, this is no help. I have posted this before, and if you want something different, this qualifies. It's on the edge of Old San Juan. You can walk to anything and the free shuttle buses run right out front. No shuttle to the pier or from the airport. http://www.thegalleryinn.com/

The Sheraton Old San Juan is right across the street from many of the cruise piers. I know Princess goes from another pier which is an inexpensive taxi ride away and that pier does not have any hotels which are within walking distance. I liked the hotel and the location as you can walk to many sites and it is a short walk to the free bus that goes to the majority of the historic sites in Old San Juan. I recommend going a day early so you have a full day of sightseeing. Have fun! It is an interesting city.

My wife and I stayed here a little over a year ago, and we liked it. Modern, clean, nice pool/beach area.

However very close to airport, and can be kind of loud when outside. Not a problem inside.

Food and drinks very good (but pricey of course). Two restaurants I believe, very good breakfast buffet.

Thursday night (I believe) they had salsa dancing class for souls braver than me!

***Not close to downtown though. I do recommend a day visiting Old San Juan. The hotel staff will happily call a cab for you.

We stay at the Sheraton Old San Juan and love it, close enough to just walk over to the cruise ship.

Sheraton OSJ is not available. Looks like you need to book 3 nights for the date I want.

I am not getting in until 5:00 PM so won't have any time for sightseeing. I would like to be close to the pier.

We stayed at the Ritz Carlton. Your cruise line may offer special pre- and post-cruise hotel prices.

You might try Hotwire, we did a cruise last year and got a good deal and ended up at Sheraton Old San Juan at a good price. The date we got was not a holiday or a party weekend.

Book Early

I know you have plenty of time......so it is good that you are thinking ahead.

Nights prior to cruises tend to book up quickly and early. Do check on Tripadvisor and Cruisecritic for best recommendations. We stayed at the Courtyard Marriott on the beach.
