I have a question regarding hotel reservations and cancelations. My son was to meet us in Oahu on Sept. 9 flying in from the East Coast. We were going to meet him the next day so he had time to recoup from the flight. He was suppose to fly into Newark from CT but he never got off the ground in CT because of the weather in Newark. They told him he could take a later flight to Newark missing his HNL connection but getting on a flight to HNL the next afternoon or they could put him on an early Delta flight the next morning. He chose the Delta flight since it got in 5 hours earlier. He had a reservation at the Pacific Marina Inn near the airport for one night but he was not able to make it because of the flight delay. The hotel did not want to know anything because they have a 48 hour cancelation policy.
It seems tht anyone fling a long distance these days on airlines that only have one flight per day to the Islands are at a disadvantage. There is no way to possibly make a reservation. The same type of thing happened two years ago with a car rental in Florida. We were delayed a full day because of a hurricane in Florida. We had an excellent weekly rental price but when we arrived we were told that we had to rent a vehicle for 6 days at a much higher price. In other words are weekly rental reservation was void.
My question is how do you plan for situations like this when they are completely out of your control. I want to be prepared for the next time. Would travel insurance cover something like this?
Thanks
