:hi: My daughter just got engaged and I promised to send her and her husband to Hawaii on their honeymoon. There are so many timeshares to choose from. Could someone please make a suggestion, based on visiting the resorts?

Thank you so much.

Besides being on thier honeymoon..... what things do they enjoy doing?

Are you going to use one of your timeshares for a trade, and what timeshare is it? or are you going to pay for hotel, etc. How many days will they be there?

I'd look for a resort which is on the beach. So that they can sit by the pool and look out at the ocean, take walks on the beach, watch the sunset into the ocean, ect.

My daughter is looking for a beach resort where she can swim, surf, watch sunsets. I've never been to Hawaii, and am unable to pick a timeshare based on first hand knowledge. No hotels or the normal tourist route. Timeshares all the way.

I have a Marriott's Manor Club to exchange. Not sure of the trading power.

Thanks for any input.

There are good swimming beaches (which are calm) and there are good surfing beaches (which have big waves) but few beaches are good for both. Surfing is a hard, physically demanding sport, so they will probably do a lot more swimming than surfing in Hawaii - be sure they try snorkeling too. A snorkel trip would make a great gift. If they go to Maui, I recommend this trip - http://www.sailtrilogy.com/adventures/lanaisunset/index.html which will take them over to the island of Lanai for a day.

How important is night life and shopping to them? If it's high on their list, then Oahu is probably a good choice - Ko Olina is about 30-45 min. out of Waikiki so it's out of the mad rush, but close enough for night life and shopping. I think it would be great for a honeymoon.

If they don't want the big city feel of Honolulu, then my second choice for a young couple would be Maui - especially the Ka'anapali area which is 5 min. away from Lahaina - a hot spot at night, but a small funky town. For lots of info. about Maui, see my trip reports/pictures at www.freewebs.com/denisetravels.

Waiohai on Kauai is on a beautiful section of beach that you can swim, float, surf, boogie board, watch the sunset....It is also a quiet resort.

Have not been to Ko Olina but imagine it has more of a resort feel (bigger, more action) but the beach (while nice) can't compare to the versatility of Poipu Beach.

Thanks to you all for the suggestions. Nice variety.

My daughter did attend a surf camp in Costa Rico last year and was on the swim team in college. She LOVES the water. Not sure her fiance is that enthusiastic but does love the outdoors.

I will copy and paste your ideas into an email and send it to them.

Now, if I just get lucky and can book one of those timeshares . . .

Waiohai

may be quiet September through May, but during the summer, it's a family mecca. There were as many families with children there this past July as I've ever seen at any Orlando resort. "Quiet" would not have been an adjective to describe it. It's a gorgeous resort. My family (2 adults, 3 kids) stayed there in July and had a fabulous time. But, if I were a honeymooner, I wouldn't have been happy with all the kids around.

LOL, the Marriott sales agent told me that during Sept. thru May, families who tour there decline to purchase because they want somewhere more "family-friendly".

So, my vote would be for Waiohai if they're going Sept. thru May. I would go for resorts in Princeville if they want to go to Kauai in the summer. Much quieter.

I loved both Maui and Kaui. Kaui might be too quiet and small for their first trip. I loved it you can drive anywhere is 25 minutes.
How about two Islands for a few days each or one Island with a long layover in Honolulu for some sightseeing for the day returning home. Just a suggestions about the two Islands not knowing how long of a honeymoon they are planning.

Maui, IMHO, is the best for honeymooners. And make sure its Lahaina/Kaanapali area. Any other they will be bored out of their socks.

My wife and honeymooned on Maui, Kauai, and Oahu, and our favorite by far was Maui. It has all beauty of the other islands, but with more nightlife. Especially the Kaanapali area. Make sure to put multiple resorts in the search. I'd include The Whaler, and Maui Marriott. I'm partial to resorts that are right on the beachwalk way, but of course the Westin is one to consider as well.

If you trade your 2BDRM for a 1BDRM you will really increase your chances of getting a Marriott unit. If they are getting married Sept through Dec, you have a good chance of getting a week. Make plans as soon as you can to increase your chances.

Regards.
Joe

Love all these responses. You are so much more help than brochures and travel agents. Real live people who've been to timeshares in Hawaii are the best resource and I thank you very much.

I agree with the Waiohai family comments.

My intention was to also convey that Waiohai is not a resort with a lot action and restaurants and such that resorts like Aruba offer.

I loved Kauai during my trip in the summer but it can be a little quiet if your daughter and her fiancee likes more of a nightlife. Kauai is beautiful and has lots to do outdoors but it rolls up the carpet a bit at night but if you like outdoors, the scenery is probably the nicest of the larger islands.

Maui has a little more facilities and is a litte more touristy but less than that of Waikiki. I stayed for the weekend in Lahaina/Kaanapali area and it was a lot of fun to walk the town in the evening for the nice restaurants and the gallaries till 10pm or so. It was an easy 5-10 min drive from Kaanapali and the beach there is quite nice although can be a little crowded at times..

Big Island of Hawaii can be nice too but not sure how much damage was done by the recent Earthquake in the Waikaloa area.

We own on Big Island. Our son and d-i-law honeymooned there and loved it but they are go go go and into activity and adventure. Night life is limited to KONA and Hilo. Shopping is not great. But if they want spectactular variety and are happy to drive to get to it, nothing is better then the Big Island.
By the way damage from earth quake is minimal at resorts. It's homes and historic buildings that took the beating.

For a honeymoon, I'd say Kauai, hands down.
But I'm partial, since that's where we went for ours.
The reality is you can't go wrong with any island.

I own at the Kona Coast resort, and have stayed there numerous times. I think the Big Island offers the greatest diversity of things to do - beaches, volcanoes, fishing, horseback riding, golf. They just had an earthquake near Kona, but I don't believe there was much damage - just loss of power.

Kauai

It's a honeymoon folks, how much nightclubbin' do these kids need?:D We did Kauai and Maui on our honeymoon (a week at each) and my personal preference is Kauai. It will be quieter and less touristy than Maui and second to none in the tropical beauty department. You said no hotels, but if I had it to do it all over again, I would have spent the first nite or two at Princeville Resort and then completed the week at a timeshare. In my mind, there's not a more beautiful and romantic setting than this resort hugging the cliff looking onto Hanalei Bay! At the least make them have a sunset dinner at Cafe Hanalei at the resort. It's a magical setting and one they will NEVER forget.
Tom

PS 25 minutes to traverse Kauai???? Maybe Lanai, but not Kauai. It's not large but it will take at least a couple hours to travel the main highway from end to end.

I stayed at Princeville resort on the SPG preview offer someone kindly referred me to. 5 nights with $100 gift certificate for resort and $185 credit for Avis (only $40+ in fees) for about $799 but some of the dates are limited.
If you have enough time in advance that might be an option if they don't mind doing a preview / sales pitch and can say no.

I had cocktails with the GM and Princeville resort is going to go through renovations next year to try to become a St. Regis. If so, little or no preview packages will be available during renovations I think and unlilkly after it becomes St. Regis...

Marriott Maui Ocean Club

We just got back a week ago from an amazing week at the Marriott Maui resort where we saw so many honeymooners.
We felt in love with Maui, we were overwhelmed by its beauty..
My daughter spent her honeymoon in Kauai and she and her husband liked it as well, but she says it's more to do in Maui.
Hope this helps...

Island guidebook

Once they choose an island, I strongly recommend they get a guidebook from Wizard Publications, Inc. www.wizardpub.com. Their books are available in bookstores or on line. We have found their books to be the absolute best for the islands of Hawaii. They best way to enjoy visiting the islands is to arrive with knowledge. It can be confusing sorting through all the free publications available once you arrive. Their books are written by locals with local knowledge. We visit the islands every year or two, and have found these guides to be invaluable.

Hi,

Don't mean to hijack the thread but have a question for honeymoon in Kauai. One of my friends are getting married next year and want to spend 10 days in Hawaii July 26-August 5/6, probably a week in a condo/timeshare in Kauai and a few days in a hotel somewhere else.

Looking at Kauai resort, they liked Pahio Ka'Eo Kai which I can book directly, over Pono Kai. I also looked and liked the look of Shearwater but would have to try an exchange, either direct or via SFX since I don't have strong traders in RCI nor II. Any advice on what/where else to look for in Kauai for a honeymoon? I thought they might want to go to Maui or Kona for the other few days but probably would do hotel instead for the other few days.

Thanks,
Mary

We loved Kauai!

I stayed a Pahio at Ka Eo Kai last year and absolutely loved it!

We are usually "snobs" about getting oceanfront accomodations. But to be honest, even when we stay oceanfront we wander to another beach, and another. The Princeville Resort area is like heaven on earth and driving down to Hanalei and taking the one lane bridges is ever-so-charming. Many natives surf in the ocean on Hanalei Bay, it is somewhat protected there from the large waves. Everything about Kauai was romantic.

Mary from (Ottawa?) Canada, if I had my Pahio pictures on this computer I'd send them to you. Maybe I can PM you tomorrow. :hi:

Hi Nessie,

I was in Kauai end of August to beginning of Sept for almost 2 weeks and did stay at the princeville resort for 5 days but the only T/S I visited was Hanlai Bay for the presentation and the SVO one.

Only drove past Ka'Eo Kai and it seemed nice although I was a little more impressed by the view around Shearwater. Would love to see your pictures if you can PM the link.

Yes and it is Ottawa more or less when I am actually home lol
