Hilton Head in August

We have never been to Hilton Head and thought we would try it next summer. (2020) I see limited availability in June, none in July but plenty in August. Is August wide open due to weather (heat plus threat of hurricanes) or some other reason?

Heat plus kids start going back to school is my best guess. Still a popular time on HHI for sure.

We went last August and we loved it. Stayed at Shipyard by Spinnaker

If you don't have to worry about the school schedule you may want to wait until late September/early October or early May. August is really hot and humid with thunderstorms most evenings.

Mostly because of kids going back to school....

As someone else has said; the entire months of September and October are quite beautiful there, and the crowds have left.

Additionally, the waters are still quite warm!

It's a combination of things but I don't believe heat is the main one as July is just as hot and is the busiest. August is certainly slower than late June through July esp the second half. Many schools in the South start back as early as the first full week of August, more commonly the second week (esp FL, AL & GA). But that doesn't mean it's not busy and crowded, just in comparison to the earlier time.

Two years in a row for hurricanes (Florence and Dorian) this first week of September - roll of the dice. Florence there was evacuation, but rescinded by governor about 3 hours later (still had to leave as no staff at Surf Watch). This year with Dorian heavy rains and winds with trees down by the reports that I have seen.
May is a great time in Hilton Head - also not so busy as kids still in school and temps are amazing!

Owned a July week since 1995 ( last week) and added an August week ( 3 rd week) 5 years ago. The difference in traffic, crowded restaurants, bike paths and lounge chairs access is significantly noticeable. HHI is drivable from so many states for families and the reason why as schools go back the crowds lessen. When my kids were young, I enjoyed July. Now that they are adults and take their GFs, I prefer the less crowded August.
