Can anyone advise me what Hilton Head will be like in April. I've been reading a lot of the posts and the general theme is that summer is extremely hot and humid. I quite like the look of the place and would look to take the kids there however it would appear that the August school holidays would not be a good choice.

The other option to us would be the two week break over Easter which is usually starting in early April. Would this be pool weather (I'm not too bothered about the sea)?

As I have never been to the Southeast coast I have no concept of the weather so was wondering if anyone could compare it to the heat and humidity I experienced in Thailand in August.

We went to HH in early April one year and it was chilly! Pool weather in the heat of the day, but just barely. We stayed at the Disney resort and I think the pool may have been heated. Will probably be warm during the day, but definitely not hot and humid. You would need sweatshirts at night.

Weather was good for us in April 2011, only advice is TAKE BUG SPRAY! Those little buggers will eat you alive if you are there the wrong week. Avoiding being out just before dusk will help.

When I was there a few years back in April it was windy and in the 70s most days. The pools were heated where we stayed (Barony), but it was a little too cold on the beach. We went to Savannah one day and it was in the 50s there.

However, when the wind died down it was wonderful and sunny. It was perfect for biking and walking around.

On the discussion of HHI being hot and humid in the summer....that's how the entire southeast United States is every summer. You can't get away from the heat. When you are used to it (I grew up in southeast Virginia) it isn't that big of a deal.

April is usually quite mild in terms of weather, although perhaps too cold to swim in the ocean. If the resort where you're staying has heated pools, it would probably be fine. We have a pool in our backyard (we live about 20 minutes south of Hilton Head) and I won't get in it until at least mid-May, but my daughter is ready to jump in in April.

Coming from England, I would think that you would find the weather pleasant at that time of year, but it's a good idea to bring clothing that's easy to layer.

The bug spray advice is spot on. Unfortunately, in addition to the typical mosquito, we have a nasty little bug in these parts known either as a "sand gnat" (here in Savannah) or a "sand flea" (on Hilton Head). They seem immune to traditional bug sprays (like "Off" or other brands). I have heard that Avon's "Skin So Soft" works well, although here in Savannah we like a locally produced product called "No Natz." Not sure if you could find it in Hilton Head, but the Avon stuff is reputed to work well.

Thanks for the advice, especially about the bugs! I think mosquitos have a predisposition towards me considering how much I've been bitten in France. It's a shame about being restricted to school holidays because May or June seems like the perfect time to go.

I'm not sure about April, but July/August is a great time to be down here. We arrived in Myrtle Beach yesterday. The weather is beautiful. I did hear that it was 100 drgrees here last week, and I'm glad I wasn't here then, but we had a week like that in Massachusetts a couple weeks ago.

Spring and fall are prime golf seasons down here, but summer is the prime time for the beach.

We've gone in April for the past few years and it has always been beautiful. The sea may be too cold to swim in (our children still do) but the heated pools and indoor pools are always fine. There is also all the other activities on the island so it is also fun from that standpoint.

I don't mind not being in the sea, can't stand the salty water. Is April sunbatheable? I can't bring my pasty English body back from holiday without a tan.

Definitely sunbathable.

FWI, some of the pools are salt water

I haven't been in any of the salt water resort pools on HHI, but our swimming pool is salt water - it doesn't leave the sticky residue on your skin that ocean water does. My husband, who loathes swimming at the beach, loves our salt water pool. It's actually easier on your skin than traditional chlorinated pool water.
