My wife and I are going to The Big Island in May and staying at the HGVC Waikoloa. In the middle of our trip we plan on spending 2 to 3 days around the Volcano and Hilo as we have never stayed on that side of the island. We have always stayed in Waikoloa and visited that area and gone back the same day. Are there any recommendations on one area over the other to stay at on that side? Thanks, Curt

If you are visiting the volcano, I'd stay right in the park.

A couple of suggestions:

Volcano House

or if you have a military connection that can make a Resv. for you there is a military R&R camp that is quite nice right in the park - http://www.kmc-volcano.com/

I agree about staying near the Volcano. Our favorite, and a place we go back to every time we visit the Big Island is the Kilauea Lodge.

In the same neighborhood as the above two places, but more on the B&B level: www.haleohia.com
