Suggestions for the best hiking trails in Palm Springs? Anything off the beaten path that is a MUST see?

Pick up one of these on eBay or wherever you get your used books or maybe there’s a new one out. It is excellent with a wide range of hikes.

Thanks for starting this thread.

What is your "comfort level" for hiking? Strenuous 5-10 mile hikes versus short-flat 1-2 mile hikes?

Joshua Tree NP has several dozen nice hikes that range from short and easy to long and strenuous. I have enjoyed hiking back to old mines.

We like Tahquitz Canyon. It's beautiful, fairly level, mostly shaded in the Canyon and has places to sit. Instead of climbing out of the canyon to do the loop we like to stay under the Palms.

One of the things I like about this fellow's website is that you will find photos of the steps along the hike. This makes it easier to follow the trail and not get lost.

He also has a Joshua Tree page.

Another hike to consider is the Bump and Grind trail in Palm Desert.

There are a lot of great hikes in the area, but which to recommend depends on fitness levels etc. I strongly recommend the AllTrails app. It will give you a map view, ratings of the trails, recent commentary on trail conditions, and let you preview the trail.

If you’re serious about hiking it’s well worth it.

My wife and I also really liked Tahquitz Canyon. Nice views, not strenuous. We did take a dip at the waterfall, which was very cold but refreshing.

For an "off the beaten path" category (Joshua Tree NP), I enjoyed hiking back to the Hexi-mine group and also the golden B mine. You'll need to Google them. Some have some open shafts which I did NOT go in to.

Definitely off the beaten path, but not too long of a drive from Palm Desert. This is a can't miss: https://hikingguy.com/hiking-trails...ladder-canyon-trail-painted-canyon-loop-hike/

We found this especially well marked and maintained in Feb, but had to literally thank God that I had just swapped our rental car out for a mini SUV (only available vehicle), due to a flat tire found just as we were heading over, the day before. There are no facilities, and with spotty cell service, I can’t imagine how long it would’ve taken before we could get any help along that bumpy drive in!
