I am posting this for a Tugger who is away from his computer:

What's the best way to find a high-end Mediterranean cruise at a discount price?

I'd shop VacationsToGo.com or otherwise retain the services of a travel agent. They still can sometimes get discounts better than the rest of us and possibly throw in port transfers, etc.

I have only gone the do-it-yourself method, but one needs to monitor price and call to get the discounts applied as they show up. that's where a good TA is worth it.

Or, identify lines of interest and shop those cruise line websites.

The earlier one books, the more likely to find price drops along the way, but for last minute, VacationsToGo would be my top pick.

www.vacationstogo.com is our go-to as well, but www.cruisesonly.com or www.crucon.com is another. Our own TUGger Sandy VDB is a travel agent who's arranged TUG group cruises too.

We just returned from a Med. cruise that had a brochure price of $4799pp that we paid $799 for as a last minute special with some other discounts. Booked through Vac2go. Deep enough discount for ya?

What are the "best" lines? Re environmental issues (dumping refuse for example), safety etc? For someone who knows nothing about ships, cruises, etc (me).

Thanks

Anita

All the 'name brand' cruise lines try very hard to be 'green'. They never dump waste at sea, and caution guests to never throw anything overboard. We were given a private tour (DW & I) of the galley by the head chef on our Windstar cruise last Fall. There were special grinders that nearly liquified all food waste and it was containerized to be removed in port. Paper and all other trash is compacted and containerized.

We feel Celebrity does a good job environmentally, but remember, they burn a gallon of diesel fuel every few inches and the jet airplane that takes you to and from the port burns several thousand lbs of kerosene per hour getting you to and from your vacation.

Everything is relative.

Thanks Passpartout- my husband is balking on taking a cruise for these reasons and I would like to try it, especially the Baltic Cruise.

That's on our short list too. Especially one that overnights in St. Petersburg. Aus/Nz this fall first though.

We did the Baltic cruise a few years ago. Loved it! Probably my favorite of many cruises.

We're looking at New Zealand (starts & ends in Sydney) early next year. What cruise line did you book for your AUS/NZ cruise?

Jim,
Have you been to New Zealand? Would you recommend a cruise or travel by car for first time visit? I like the idea of a cruise, but DH would like to explore by car and do some fishing.
Thanks!

We're on Celebrity Solstice in late Nov. Sydney to Auckland. It's Vac.2Go's FastDeal #31863 if you want details.

I could see a motor trip in NZ with some fishing, but unfortunately, our ship has not come in yet, so this time it's a cruise. Looking at the scenery there, it looks like Idaho, except with an ocean. I'll stay home to fish.

Thanks Jim,
The cruise on Celebrity looks great! That is our favorite cruise line. We are looking for a similar itinerary, but in Jan/Feb. It looks like the Solstice will still be in that region in early 2014.
DH has this dream of camping & driving around NZ. I'm sure a cruise would be less expensive. Timeshares aren't an option because he doesn't want to stay in the same area.

Denise,
So sorry to hijack this thread about high-end cruises. I would also suggest vacations to go, they have some great deals 90 days before sailing.

I've been very pleased with the service from Mike at Homeport cruises. Mike is able to book for the public, but also offers discounts for military, seniors, airline employees, etc.

Denise: I got a call from the RCI Hotel/Crusie promotion Club. I am also very much interested in such a cruise. If your interested person determines the trip he wants and sends me a PM I will contact this travel club and advise him of the savings, if any.

I hope other tuggers give more particulars about great cruises and any special deals they come across.

If you are a broker or salesperson, or work in an allied field, we welcome your participation on the board. We value your industry perspective and valuable insights. We do not appreciate, however, attempts to use our bbs for direct commercial purposes. We do not, for instance, welcome your adding tag lines promoting your business, such as "Call me for more information." Use the board as a way to be helpful and build your reputation, not as a direct sales tool, please. Due to flagrant commercial violations by some abusers in the past, we have found it necessary to be very strict about this.

Chosen usernames which promote you or your business are not permitted. When discovered, your account access may be banned until the name has been changed.

Individual users please note that messages promoting anything for which you may receive some personal gain are considered to be advertising, and are thus prohibited. Promotion of any service where you would get referral compensation is considered to be advertising. Directing somebody to your classified ad on TUG or elsewhere is considered to be advertising. Promotion of a website where you have anything for sale or rent is considered to be advertising.

The advertising ban includes information in your bbs signature. You may link to a commercial website in your signature, but the link itself may not indicate the nature of the site. If your URL or domain name indicates the nature of the site, it should not be visually displayed. A visual link saying only "My website" or other similar innocuous wording is acceptable.

Replying to somebody's question on the bbs with an ad is not an acceptable defense - if replying to an inquiry, click on the poster's name at the left of their post and send your offer as direct email or bbs private message instead of posting publicly to the bbs. If the person has not enabled email or private messaging, the best you can do is post a response merely saying "Since your email address is not available, please contact me via email or private message" -- and be sure YOU have email and/or private messaging enabled in your bbs profile (accessed via the UserCP link in the blue bar near the top of the screen).

The Only Exceptions to the advertising ban are:

Last Minute Rentals forums
Members-only Sightings / Distress Exchange forum, where timeshare owners may post messages offering timeshare weeks that are about to expire
Bargain Deals sub-forum of the Buying, Selling, Renting forum
