HHI vs. the Cape

I go to the Cape often. How is HHI different than the Cape? Is the difference worth the trip from northern NJ compared to the shorter distance to Ma?

I've only been to HHI once, but the main difference to me is that the beach at Hilton Head is hard-packed sand, very flat and firm. You can ride a bicycle on it, and people do. It's really nice. The water is warmer, too. Obviously Cape Cod and Hilton Head have different "personalities," but they're both good places to visit if you like the beach.

Cape Cod is about five times as long from end to end. HHI is smaller

Cape Cod is surrounded by ocean water on all sides. HHI has a salt marsh and very shallow water on the inland side.

HHI is set up in a series of neighborhoods called plantations. Cape Cod has small towns and villages each having a different feel.

HHI has a focus on golf and tennis in addition to the beach.

Most of the ocean is NOT visable from the main roads in HHI. The neighborhoods shield the views.

I've been to both and they are very, very different. I consider Cape Cod more similar to the Delaware beaches and parts of the Outer Banks. Hilton Head is more like a resort community surrounded by water.

I love both areas, but for different reasons.

Like other posters, very different places... the cape is new england... nice national seashore , off beat little towns like Ptown, Brewster, Wellfleet... more a homey kind of feel with a variety of places to stay... you also have the option of heading over th MVineyard easily.... HHI is flat all over and yes the beaches are wide and nice but it has a nice southern flair and isnt far from Savannah which is worth a visit anytime !! HHI is more condos to me but I love them both for what they offer... both have golf , But HHI has more emphasis on it and more courses to choose from... I think its worth a drive from NJ or a plane to HHI.. I have visited at least 5 times and never grow tired of it.. the cape is so close to home for me so its convenient and still has places with a lot of charm.

Another nice thing about HHI is the off season is not so cold. We were there in late March (my kids' spring break) and the weather was wonderful. The ocean was too cold for me but the kids braved it to boogie board. About 1/3 of the restaurants and shops were still closed for the season but how many souvenir shops do you need? We had visited during the summer 4 years ago and thought it was nice but a little too hot for most of the day.

I am following this thread with much interest.

I lived on the Cape for 5 years, and still visit from time to time.

I have read much about Hilton Head---and like its 'allure'---based on the info I have read.

So, this post posed a VERY good question (from my interest standpoint.)
