If you are asking: "Can I use HGVC's RCI portal to back-door book a HGVC resort?" The answer is: Yes you can. Reportedly, HGVC enforces a 9-month restriction on its own members (as if its a club reservation); and a 1-in-4 limitation per resort.

If you are asking, "Can I use the RCI portal to book any RCI resort with HGVC points?" The answer is: That's what its there for.

Phoning HGVC will, at a minimum, cost you more in booking fees, and perhaps, questions about why you are not making a club reservation.

I have made a HGVC reservation through RCI for less points and they remind you of the 1 in 4 rule. It is a great way to stretch your points in Vegas or Orlando, these two places seem to have a lot of units in RCI.

I booked into Hilton Club NYC via RCI.

So yes you can do it.

Problem is this, HGVC deposits units into RCI prior to 9 months out, but as a previoius poster mentioned they restrict HGVC members from booking 9 months out to match the internal club season restrctions. It is possible that many or all of the units have already been picked over before the 9 month windows is open.

They also deposit mainly Orlando , Vegas and Big Island HI, occassionally a very limited number of Oahu HI and some NYC, and CA (via the new deal with the GP).

It is possible to get the unit cheaper points but remember you have to pay the RCI exchange fee which is nearly 4 times the price of the internal HGVC fee of $49.
