HGV Bargain of the Day.....

You're only saving $2000 with those points! Yikes! Lifestyles of the rich and famous who buy timeshares LOL.

exactly....they are saying that 30k clubpoints are worth a little less than $2k. That is ridiculous....but you can borrow from 2024...:)

Just to add, it started out at $8k for a ticket, then dropped to $6k, and now they are allowing clubpoints to reduce the cost to about $4k....they must be having a challenge filling the event.

Who's got that kind of points and money to burn? That's 60k points for 2 people (you wouldn't attend alone) plus $8000. That's more than a resale timeshare. Yikes.

It’s a pretty crap deal isn’t it?

The twenty3 club at the Singapore gran prix last weekend was $5k per person USD and it had multiple levels, three Michelin star restaurants, dedicated meet and greet with the drivers, a list DJs (including Lil Jon if that’s your thing), free flowing drinks and more.

And it’s Singapore, which makes it even better.

That’s ridiculous! Talk about complete devaluation of your product.

It doesn't even include a room for the night, just some food and drinks! o_O

That would make it a little better if it was room and the hospitality suite...

And buffet. That way I can use my buffet pants.
There is "interactive premium food stations".... Whatever that is. Maybe that is where the hookers are involved that @brp was commenting about

Best case would be ~$3K of MFs for $2K in savings. Worst might be ~$6K of MFs to save $2K. In my experience using points for anything but stays has a terrible ROI. I have transferred points from HICV to IHG in the past when I was unable to use them and it was better than losing them, but certainly not a great deal.

And this is the problem with points, they get to dictate the value where the owner has no control, for this very reason deeded TS are winning out.

For their original purpose - using at resorts, this is not true. They can't increase the points (overall) required at a resort. They can only rejigger so that some things go up while others go down. The total points can't change. So, there is very much control here.

Other experiences are a different story. caveat emptor.

Chers.

In terms of "savings" with a timeshare. I see it as $2,000 week for a place that goes for $5,000 a week. So you "save" $3,000 a year. However, you have to factor in the purchase price and the time value or money. Let's say its 10%, in that case you couldn't save anything if you spent over $30,000 on the deed.

Maybe if you model it as a $7,000 a week place, but I truely doubt most people with timeshares would pay that much, unless it was a unicorn week. Even then, it caps at $50,000 and I just don't see it as a guaranteed return.

As Will Rogers said, "I'm more worried about the return of my money, than the return on my money."

With this in mind, the resale value is what worries me the most if I overpay for any asset.

In the end I think people are willing to pay more in MF for availabiltiy and flexability. I mean sure we "own a week at a 2 bedroom" but wouldn't it be nice to get 2 weeks in a studio this trip as the kids/grandkids aren't coming. Then when they are with you splurge on the 2 or 3 bedroom.

Mostly what I see is the optimization trap, which if you solve can be fun puzzle and very rewarding, but its not for novices being the "complicated toy" that timeshares are.

Used to go to Laguna Seca and many other places as a youth.

It was great having Pit Passes and dinner with drivers.

Amazing times..

Thank you!
Saw many races over many summers at Watkins Glen in the 70s with a college buddy, including F1 races. 50+ yrs later we still get together despite the 1600 miles separating us. His father was a marketing director for a major tire company and we always got great ticket packages for free. Back then you could camp at the track for free if you had tickets! As we both approached retirement we went back numerous times to see Nascar and Indy car races there.

Seem the race is not as popular as originally expected / hoped..

I know for me, we have some interest in the race but not huge fans.. so we would stay away that weekend to avoid the crowds...

I've read that visitors are unhappy with the set up for F1 going on now. I'm in Vegas next Tuesday to Friday and I'm curious to see what is going one.

Back to the OP. I wonder who the marketing wizard was at Hilton who came up with the idea of using points and money to get into their branded Club House? I'm sure you end up dropping all those points and money to sit next to Hilton Executives and Key Suppliers who paid ZERO. Ouch!

Actually the idea/concept goes back to DRI.

For the right person the Sponsorship Passes can be amazing.

They might even pull in some celebrities. Not my thing, but some people really need to feel special, and bit of money is nothing to them.

There are people who go to Vegas and if they don't win or lose $100,000+ it wasn't a fun weekend. Again, not my thing.
