My husband and I want to plan a trip to the Big Island for our 50 th anniversary in December 2022. We want to take the kids and grandkids and rent a house . My husband saw a house he wants to rent but I don’t know what to do about travel insurance. I have read many of the threads on insurance and went to some of the sites recommended but now I’m even more confused. Ex: Do we list everyone’s names on the policy? If we book the house now, do we buy the travel insurance on the flights from the airlines? Do credit cards offer travel insurance? I even liked the yearly travel insurance since we usually take 3 or 4 trips a year but don’t see how I could book that now for the house rental in Hawaii. Any insight would be appreciation.

Decide what you want to insure against. Cancellation? Much, if not all of the expense is cancellable, like the rental & airfare. Hawaii is USA, so health insurance from home should cover. You needn't pay for a rental car until you pick it up and your regular car insurance may well cover you there. Depending on what card you have, but many premium cards will cover all or part of unexpected travel snafu's when you charge the cost on them. As to naming everyone on a single policy, different people have different needs. You might suggest that your invitees get their own coverage if they want it. You might offer to supplement or reimburse the cost if you wish, but it's up to you. Your 50th anniversary trip is over 1 1/2 years away, so nothing is critical. The only time we rush into getting travel insurance in place is when we are buying health insurance for foreign travel and want to insure against pre-existing conditions. Most carriers require payment within a couple weeks from paying the trip deposit, but your trip is domestic and it's not like you're going on safari or backpacking in remote places in the 3rd world.

Thanks Jim,
The house can be cancelled up to a week before , so I’m mostly concerned about if something happened in the week before or when we are there, ex. A death in the family. I like the idea of having coverage from a credit card, my current go to card doesn’t offer travel coverage, so I need to do some more investigation.
