Help with renting my week on eBay

Recently a guy wanted to rent my week that I listed on eBay. Since eBay doesn't allow passing email address in eBay message, I cannot send him the Renter Agreement via email and he cannot send me his email address for PayPal and for the reservation. Also if he "Buy it Now", how can I make him pay $100 deposit, and later after the reservation confirmed, make him pay the remaining balance?

Since this is the first time I'm renting out my week, I'm still learning what's the best way and right way to proceed on eBay transactions. Guess many of you have experiences on eBay and any advice is greatly appreciated.

Thank you.
Michael

Personally, I don't think ebay is a good choice for timeshare rentals. I like TUG, Redweek, and Craigslist. Ebay is too cumbersome.

Can you send your phone number to the renter? Then talk /text to get each other's email addresses.

Does it cost you money to put a reservation in your guest's name? If not, just send the guest the confirmation and make the full amount of rent payable at that time.

Since I usually have concurrent listings on some other site, I've sent the listing number from one of the sites and asked that I be contacted through that site.

Mostly on eBay, I use fixed price listings. You get paid immediately, don't mess with rental agreements (which I don't do anyway). Send a guest confirmation and it's over except for the feedback.

Thanks for all of the replies. My resort charges $100 to put someone else's name, and they charge again if I change the name later on. So I need to get a small deposit before making a reservation with his name.

chapjim, you never get a trouble without a Renter Agreement? Just curious.

i got around thru soemthing like itr452 at tugbbs.com
that worked for me and someone i was msg'ing! try that instead of the @ sign

So does mine (Wyndham) which is what makes eBay rather attractive in that sense. You are paid before you have to buy a guest confirmation.

I have never had a problem from not using a rental agreement. Not once. I have done rental agreements, maybe two total. I spent too much time faxing or scanning and emailing documents that didn't say much more than the emails I exchange with my renters.

What I don't do is talk about terms on the phone. I avoid phone calls entirely if I can partly because I want things in writing, partly because I work at a DoD agency and have to turn off and lock my phone in a box during the day.

I've rented timeshares on ebay more than 30 times, so this is my experience as a renter, not a seller.

After I pay via paypal, the seller will sometimes email to ask me what name to put the guest certificate under.

Some sellers will just email me the confirmation immediately with my name on it after I have paid.

I like renting on ebay because I get to see the feedback and sales history of the seller (many have been renting on ebay for years), I can use paypal (or paypal credit) and the price is usually lower on ebay than other outlets. If I see something on ebay, I can buy it and that's that.

As a renter, the negatives to ebay is limited selection -- if you want Bonnet Creek great, but you won't find many obscure resorts.

If you are renting your week on ebay for the first time, be prepared to sell for less. People will not trust a low-feedback seller and the price will be less.
