Does anyone know what timeshare resorts through RCI have a nice swimmable and possible walkable stretch of beach. We'd like to stay at a resort with ocean view and also be able to go in the water. A few years ago we stayed at Club Regina but from what I remember it was really rocky.

Would you consider Nuevo? I like the beaches there better and there's always plenty of availability at the Grand Mayan.

We would rather be closer to town. We visited Nuevo Vallarta to see a timeshare and didn't really like the feel of the area. Would really prefer a resort with a good beach in PV.

No responses so I guess there isn't any.

The beach in the Marina is sandy. We stayed at the Mayan Palace, next door to the Club Regina, several times, and have enjoyed walking on the beach there.

As for swimming, there isn't a single location in the entire PV area where I would think of swimming. But the beach in the Marina area (extending to the north of the entrance to the marina) are swimmable and I have often seen people in the water near the hotels and resorts along the Marina waterfront.

I don't know what the beach situation is like for the resorts in the Hotel Zone (i.e., near Bouganvillias and Vallarta Torres, for example).

I think there are few timeshares just south of downtown, in the Romantic Zone. Those would be close to Playa de los Muertos, which receives a lot of recreational use.

There are also timeshare resorts further down the coast, starting in Conchas Chinas and extending toward Mismaloya. The only beach in that area that we have visited is Mismaloya, which is nice and is used recreationally. I think that the other beaches in that area are probably pretty skinny, and might often be rocky instead of sandy.

I swim everyday at Lindo Mar, just a bit south of town. It is always beautiful. I also swim at Playas Gemalas, both the north and south beaches. They are further south between Lindo Mar and Mismaloya. I don't swim at Los Muertos Beach when we stay there or at Mismaloya Beach when we do a day trip there. Too many boats there in a small area with all of their oil.

Troglobyte: Is that because the water is dirty or because of some other reason?

I'm not T_R_Oglodyte, but I do think the water appears kind of dirty.

First of all, I’ve never met a beach I didn’t love, so take this with a grain of salt.

The beaches in PV are not the best beaches in Mexico. My favorite Mexican beaches are in the Riviera Maya with their white sand and clear sapphire blue water. Next I’d say Cabo, even though most the beaches aren’t swimmable, with beautiful golden sand and ferocious waves. The beaches/water in PV just isn't in the same league.

The ocean water in PV is kind of gross – there’s a brown foam on the water, or at least there has been every time I’ve been there, always in March. I don’t remember the reason for this, but it’s not because of sewage. There is a scientific explanation, I just don't remember it.

It also doesn’t stop me from going in and swimming and body surfing. Gross, I know! Believe me, I’m not the only one swimming – there are always lots of others in the water frolicking in the brown froth!

It's a sanitation issue.

By way of background I spent the first nine years of my career as a water quality/sanitation engineer, doing a lot of sanitary surveys of contamination of various water sources.

What I observe being out and about in the Puerto Vallarta area is enough to convince not to go in the water anywhere between Punta Mita and Mismaloya. Nuevo is certainly not any better, as that is right next to the mouth of the Rio Ameco, which drains the entire inland area.

I agree with Steve. The water looked much better this year than it did last year, but one day from the 12th floor of our resort, we could see some "cruddy looking brown foam" that was hundreds of yards long streaming down the current in front of the resort towards the jetty. We were not sure what is was, but suspected it was not good!

We don't swim in the ocean unless it is on a snorkel tour.

That is exactly how I describe it! And it has been like this for as long as I can remember - I recall describing the "brown sea scum" to my parents in the early/mid 90's so this isn't anything new.

Can someone recommend the best location for us to take a snorkel tour to. I see that there are tours to Las Caletas, Marietas, Los Arcos. Don't know if you have a recommendation as to these or someplace else.

Maybe so, but PV is still my favorite place to escape from the Michigan winters.

Me too! The water doesn't bother me one bit :D

Bunk - check out the excursions offered through Vallarta Adventures - the Las Caletas excursion was great.

I'm going to do the outdoor adventure in March.
