Help, severe insomnia has returned!

I tried Lunesta and found it to be very affective with little side affects.

I was told a while back that regular exercise also helps insomnia. A tired body makes a tired mind and thast helps turn the body off to sleep!!

I just got some sample of Lunesta to try from the doctor's. I haven't been doing well with exercise lately, I admit. I was swimming two to three times a week last year, but the traffic coming home has gotten so bad that a 45 minute trip "down the hill" as we say, takes about 90 minutes to come home in the evening. When they finish road construction, (early in 2007, whatever that means) it may get better, also when it is warmer and lighter it is easier to go for walks again.

thanks,
Liz

I know that xanax works for many people but I have heard a lot of negative things about it for individuals who are aging or aged.I am not saying you are aged, but if your body is changing you may need to take another anti-anxiety drug. If anxiety is the cause of your insomnia you may want to take a antidepressant with an anxiety component.I have gone to a number of workshops for my profession regarding this issue and they all really seem to agree that when you get the symptoms of insomnia, and anxiety under control then all of the other ideas, sleep machine, meditation, exercise etc. may help; then you could maybe get rid of the medication. Get yourself a Dr. who specializes in anxiety, or at least knows a lot about it, most do not, from the experiences I have had in my professional life. I have had some personal experience with this as well as work experience.

I know from reading TUG that you have had a lot of stress in your life and after a while I think it would have to get really hard.
Good Luck Liz! Hang in there and take care of yourself!

I have dealt with insomnia for many, many years. I believe it is genetic in my case. I recently went through a sleep study at a sleep clinic and now how a double whammy - insomnia and severe sleep apnea. I have been dealing with the CPAP machine, and so far it hasn't made the insomnia any better.

I am determined to try to get myself on a regular exercise schedule to see if it will help the insomnia. I am also cutting all caffeine and significantly cutting down on alcohol. I also went through some biofeedback training with the sleep doctor - it mostly involves deep breathing. It is important to do it every day. There is some computer software you can buy to help with training yourself in deep breathing. It is the Journey to the Wild Divine and the newest Healing Rhythms (and best according to the doctor); Journey is about $150 on Amazon and Healing Rhythms about $300.00. I am thinking of purchasing one of these. It may make the exercises of deep breathing more fun. I haven't seen a lot of results yet in any of my efforts, but want to keep trying.

The only thing that has really helped my insomnia significantly, and I have used it for years, is the drug Amitryptilan (Elavil). Unfortunately, it causes constipation for me, so I cut my dose. I tried to go off it entirely, and couldn't sleep at all. I have tried Lunesta, and it got me to sleep, but I fear getting dependent on it.

Liz-

I really feel for you! I used to suffer from severe insomnia for a couple of years.

However, I don't anymore - and the reason it stopped - I quit my horrible, stressful job. It was amazing. The last day of my job was the last time I truly suffered from insomnia.

Obviously, this isn't meant to tell you to quit your job. But, I think it really points out how stress and anxiety can overwhelm you to this point. It didn't matter how tired I was, I couldn't sleep. Nothing worked. I'd wake up in the middle of the night and toss and turn until the alarm went off. Even when I wasn't thinking about the stress I was under, it was so deep in my subconscious that it affected everything about my life - my attitude, sleep, you name it. I can't believe I actually drove to work some days - I was an accident waiting to happen.

I've seen a few of your posts, so I know that you've been under a lot of stress lately.

I wish I had the perfect advice - but I don't - just a sympathetic ear. Good luck and take care!
