Help: Just updated my Apple iPod Touch to new OS and lost all my apps!

I wasn't paying attention when I did the upgrade. Now I just discovered that all of my purchased apps are no longer on my iPod Touch! And I don't see any of the ones I bought in the past year in the updated iTunes program on the laptop either. Ugh!!! I've upgraded the OS before and never had this happen. I don't understand what happened. Can someone help?
