As many of you know, our dog, Sam, passed away this summer, after 13 great years. Our son has been asking for a snuggle dog since dealing with her death and we recently adopted from a local shelter. Our contract/adoption states that the dog is spayed. At our vet check, the vet noted that she could not find a spay scar...

Guess who went into HEAT this evening?! I have pull-up on the dog right now and know that I need to buy dog diapers tomorrow...was SO hoping to avoid this, but our vet (I called at home tonight) says she cannot spay while in heat. I've read that this lasts 3-4 weeks. Any advice??? We've always had our pets spayed prior to going into heat, so this is new territory for us.

They make doggie diapers??????? Wow! That's a actually a good idea.

I haven't had any experience with dogs in heat since our chidhood dog was going through it, so I don't have any suggestions really. I'm sure some TUGgers with good ideas will chime in.

Never that long for us

Our dog will probably be spayed soon but she isn't yet and she has gone in heat several times. Physically the process may last longer but the actual "problem" was never more than a week to ten days. Most of the house is carpeted but the kitchen, office, utility room aren't and our house is such we can block off access from those areas to the rest of the house fairly easily so it isn't a major problem.

If that is a possibility for you then I would definitely do that.

Dogs are in heat 3 weeks and they can get pregnant at any time during that 3 weeks. We never let our gals out then, or took them for walks, as that leaves a train for the males to follow. We let them out, on a leash, in our yard to do their business and brought them back in. Even that will not guarantee that male dogs won't show up around the house. And be aware that the females will run to find a male....we had one who escaped from a kennel for a few hours (we were in Florida) and she was found with 3 males...all with grins on their faces :D. Because she had a heart condition, our Vet did spay her. Maybe you can confine her to a room with wood or tile floors so she doesn't spot up furniture and carpet. Good luck.

Same thing happened to us, but I called around a found a vet who would spay while in heat. It cost a little more but was worth it to us. They got her in within a couple days.

I realize that this is a "dog" issue but I just wanted to relate a problem that happened with one of my cats. I had her spayed at about a year but she kept going into "heat" for years after that.

It was awful, the wailing, the rolling, the unavoidable males that kept showing up at the door. Although she was an inside cat she somehow managed to escape during these cycles and eventually came down with kitty aids.

The vet said that a small portion of ovary must have been missed during the operation-that he could re-operate but even a misplaced cell or two could cause her to keep going into heat.

Even with the kitty aids she lived to be about 15, so I wonder if the vet ever knew what he was talking about.

Needless to say I switched vets.

Since your contract said she was already spayed, you might be able to get the shelter to cover some if not all of the costs for any possible cleanup needed. If they knew she wasn't spayed, the cost would have been passed on to you to have it done so you probably wouldn't be able to get them to pay for it.
We got our dog from the Newport News, VA SPCA and our agreement said we had to get her spayed within a certain time limit or give her back and forfeit the fees. They gave us a discount card (ask about it) for the procedure from a vet in Newport News, so it was only around $50 to have her spayed.

Doggie diaper.. buy the pantie, but get women's pads.. they are much less expensive. B*tches are usually fertile about mid-way through their 3 week cycle, but that varies from girl to girl. Some dogs keep themselves clean, others only have slight discharge while others make a big mess.

Our dog went into heat while we were on vacation (she was with us). We put the doggie diaper on her and she refused to move, tail between legs, so sad looking. When we were out/about with her, we took diaper off. The good part.. her heat started near the end of our time at Grand Timber.

The advice not to leave her outdoors in your yard is wise. She will attract males and when she is "ready" she will be just as ready to get to them.

Before, I get a lecture about spaying, which is something I firmly believe in... this dog is a breeder for a guide dog school. Her pups grow up to become guides for the blind.

I just remembered that years ago we had a cute little mutt gal, who came in heat when our son brought home a big black Lab. I finally called the Vet and he had some pills that we could give our girl to stop the heat cycle. Hopefully, your Vet can help.

Most veterinarians prefer not to spay a dog in heat because the uterine tissue can be swollen, fragile, and more prone to damage. Dogs also have a tendency to bleed more when they're in heat. This makes surgery more risky for dogs, as well as for cats.

Ceralee your vet was probably right. Years ago I had a cat spayed and she later went into heat again. They did say at the time that that happened rarely. There were always issues with that cat and unfortunaely she did not live long after that.

Thank you all for the advice- very helpful!

I almost fell over when I saw how much $$$ dog diapers are- $20 for 12 of them. The permanent/reusable ones were not small enough, so I did not go with those. I bought Pampers Swaddlers (40 for $10) and cut a hole for her nub of a tail- this is working well. We leave it off when she's in the kitchen with us or crated, but on in the carpeted areas. So, this is going better than I anticipated it would. To the pp that mention some are cleaner than others, she's been grooming herself and this is not as bad as I anticipated. I removed her crate bed and have thick towels in there, so I just thrown them in the wash and rotate them out daily, which also gives her a break from being in a diaper 24/7.

Re: the shelter...I'm not going to bother with them. It's $150 to adopt a dog that has not been altered, and $80 to adopt one that has been altered. We payed the $80, our vet agreed to give us the SPCA spay rate, so we still end up ahead. We have no intention of returning the dog, so I figure there is nothing positive that can come from involving the shelter.
