Hawaii alternatives

I'm kinding of liking Palm Springs and the entire valley. No ocean view from the decks but having palm trees in the view is nice enough for me.

Nice view.. Which resort in Palm Springs?
Top one is the WM Indio and the bottom two are the VI Oasis. What I like about the Oasis is it's a gated subdivision turned into a resort. The rooms are huge with a garage that has two bikes for guest use. What I like about the WM Indio is the Badlands Trail behind the resort, the lazy river and the multiple hot tubs and bbqs.

What I love about both is there is no snow , it's warm enough and the Palm trees.

Anybody else constantly going back to Hawai’i because of this?
Ha! Interesting thread. You live west coast. Those of us on the west coast have great flights as added incentive to get the Aloha-Virus. We went to HI for the first time 90 days after we moved to CA from the east. I (or we) spent over 150 nights on Maui over the next 18 yrs, and threw in another couple wks on Oahu. Jan2020, we decided we were tired of Maui, but def not HI, so we switched to Oahu and have spent 40 or so nights on Oahu in 3.5 yrs. So, yes, this ... but if I lived east of the rockies, it'd be a different story.
I’ve got Cabo booked for next year to give it a try but it feels a bit forced
Ha! We did the same last November. It did feel a bit forced, esp to my wife. But we had a good time and I vote we go back. The flight was slightly shorter, I guess, but notably more money, (the money isn't significant, but it is mostly obnoxious taxes, so I wouldn't make a habit of Cabo for that alone) and the food is not as good as Oahu. But change of pace is a plus

One trip to Palm Springs was so cold we left.
LOL. Been there, done that, on a trip from NYC. We drove to Phoenix. Next day, it got cold there too. Knowing nothing, I had the idea we'd drive to Sedona. I asked around. Nope. Needed chains. Drove to San Diego by taking a left up-hill at Palm Springs and then through some beautiful alpine towns. There was actually a cute town on that road called Alpine. If you have a car and it isn't snowy up in those mtns, that is a long, nice drive.

Hawaii is a classic trip. For those of us that live in the west coast it is very affordable airfare and a wonderful vacation from our winters. Alaska Airlines companion fare always sweetens the deal for me too. I have yet to buy into a timeshare, but they keep offering me deals to stay at their properties if I attend a presentation. I wonder if they will soon stop offering me these deals when I never buy. Still looking to get a timeshare to use in Hawaii whether it be Hilton or Worldmark. I like the Marriott properties there too but maintenance fees are crazy expensive:

It’s good to switch it up…just went to Fiji in December and that had a wonderful Club Wyndham to visit. Would highly recommend.

Europe is not really a warm place in winter. however there is one exception and that is the Canary Islands which is the warmest part of Europe in the winter. I haven’t been yet but have been looking at the cruises that go there for sure. Plus Spain is a fun place year round

We're planning to do HI in 2026 if Interval matches. Till then it's not really set in stone though. Otherwise living on the east coast it really makes me want to see about the Caribbean more - but IDK - any flying is more of a hassle (except maybe Alligient to Sanford FL) than driving places. Usually even if it takes 2 days to drive down to FL it's similar cost for 3 people vs flying and renting a car. Ft Lauderdale is warm enough though the inexpensive TS options aren't on a beach.

I live on west coast and am starting to prefer Cabo over Hawaii. Of course both are great and both have downsides but Cabo is half the flight distance, only 1 hour time zone difference and the service people are happy you are there. Cabo resorts are amazingly lux and well maintained.

Oceanfronts are easier to reserve and not as expensive. Whales are abundant in winter. Snorkeling is cold in winter even with a shortie wetsuit but Cabo Pulmo is a UNESCO heritage reef. I've never seen so much abundant fish and wildlife.

Last time I was on Maui 2 years ago (pre-Lahaina fire), it felt like asking for service (mid-week garbage pickup) was a hassle, maintenance lacked, and mainlanders not feeling very welcome. The big island was more accommodating.

I also enjoy WKV and Sedona. Different trip because it is more about hiking than the water.

I need to explore Cancun and PV - never been there.

Plus there’s always the excitement of a possible kidnapping or drive by shooting!

Ha. I feel safer in Cabo than many American cities. Have you ever been there?

Each place has it's pluses and minuses. I haven't always felt safe in Hawaii either.

There is no alternative to Hawaii but after the first visit to Palm Springs last December, it quickly rises to my second favorite location. Still a lot to explore!

I think golf is better in the Palm Springs area. Definitely way more restaurants and bars too. The Palm Canyon hikes are great. It's not bad at all but I found that I was wearing a jacket in the mornings and evenings which makes Hawaii a better destination, imo.

Head for Fiji, New Zealand, or Australia. The flights are long. But there are so many other pluses.
And one big minus - can you still do timesharing?

US homicide rate: 6/100,000
Hawaii: 2.8/100,000
Baja California Sur: 70/100,000

*just* like the USA

You're entitled to your own opinions but not your own facts.

70/100k homicide rate is Baja California (norte), a different state. It has much more crime because of its proximity to the United States - the border states are by far the most violent in Mexico.

By contrast Baja California Sur has a homicide rate of around 9/100k. See: https://elcri.men/en/state-ranking/

For a list of Mexican states with their homicide rates.

Many US cities are way higher than that. New Orleans is a popular TS destination with a homicide rate in the 50s/100k. (See: https://usafacts.org/articles/which-cities-have-the-highest-murder-rates/)

And many other US cities have homicide rates three or four times more than Baja California Sur. Eg from the link above, St Louis, Baltimore, Philadelphia.

Baja California Sur – a state which has historically had one of the country’s lowest crime rates – has seen a dramatic rise in murders during the last year. For instance, 252 murders were recorded in January-June, a 342 percent increase on the same period of last year.

you may go to Mexico and New Orleans all you want. We were talking about Hawaii, and that’s where you’ll find me.

If you look at the dates of the comments in the linked article from csarn.com, it looks like that article may date back to at least 2021. Tourism was down due to the pandemic, so the void may have temporarily been filled by bad actors. Not sure what the current situation is.

Just like in the US cities mentioned in other posts, serious crime in Los Cabos tends to be focused in certain areas. Stay out of those areas and avoid involvement in the drug trade and human trafficking, and your chances of being victim while on your vacation are probably close to the odds of being struck by lightning. While on rare occasions some violence does leak out into tourist areas, it is rare.

Scary stories about people victimized on vacation also get lots of clicks, so also expect these rare incidents to get way more media coverage and social media elevation than their frequency actually deserves. It’s sort of like what happens after a rare aviation accident - suddenly every go-around, precautionary landing, etc becomes “News” and it seems like aviation is suddenly becoming less safe. Give it time and the media will shift to the next scary story.

The long flights are a real bummer to us anyway. Even the short fights are no fun, imo. I'm kind of enjoying the long road trips. We did two destinations this winter. We usually drive up to 12 hours but more often six or seven hours and stay at resorts using bonus time when we can. We had to get home for a family emergency and did an eighteen hour drive. If it wasn't for the bad weather on that trip I would have been fine.

I agree that Mexico is definitely safe for tourists. Over 40 million International tourists went to Mexico in 2024 bringing over 32 billion USD to the Mexican economy.

I also agree that Mexico has a higher rate of crime than in the USA but that crime rate is not the same regarding tourists. Crimes against tourists in Mexico are lower than regular crime rates in most places of the USA including Hawaii.

We love Road Trips. We are going on one this Spring to Southern CA stopping a number of places.
