Has anyone replaced shower glass?

I give up! There's no way I can remove the stains from our shower glass. I'd like to replace it. Does anyone have an idea of the cost?

I sure wished we had purchased a home with a non-glass shower area.

The only glass in my shower is the door and it was really nasty looking. We had to retile the floor so we also purchased a new shower door with frosted glass. Don't remember the price because it was a few yrs ago but we paid someone to do it. We also got new vanity, vanity top, sink and toilet. DH is not talented in this area.

Call a shower door/glass contractor. A simple door could be a couple hundred bucks. A full glass walled shower could be a couple thousand. A picture would help (I've spec'd material costs before for our own jobs) but a competent contractor on site is the best determiner, IMO.

Also, a glass company can suggest other options, including professional ones, for cleaning your existing glass. Ask :)

Yes, I have replaced a glass shower door.

I replaced it with a shower curtain. ;) I hated having to clean the track the door slid in--so much effort. I hated the spots on the glass. I hated having to lean across the track while trying to bathe my little children. I hated that only half the tub could be accessed at a time because half was always blocked by the shower door. So, I just got rid of the thing. Put up a lovely shower curtain that could be thrown in the wash for cleaning or even changed to another curtain if I wanted to change the decor. Voila! (Okay, it wasn't just a shower door--it was a glass door across a tub. Maybe not your situtation.)

Yes, I did the same with our glass bypass tub door, replacing it with nice curved shower curtain bar and curtain. Best singular bathroom change I ever made. One word...Amazon :D

I have a feeling the OP has a really nice glass-enclosed shower "room".....a bit beyond what I could possibly solve in an afternoon as a DIY'er.

DIY shower door glass replace

This might not be as bad a job as you think. Take the whole door, frame and all out. One person has to hold the door steady while the other unscrews the screws holding it to the jamb. Now you drive the whole thing to a glass company. Ask for a price installed in your frame; if you like the price, leave it with them. Check with auto-glass places too; they sell a lot of stock curved glass, but they can order flat tempered glass (which this will be). Might be a lot of driving around, but you'll probably get the lowest price this way. Ken

Wonka,
As somebody else mentioned here, get frosted glass as a replacement if you don't have it now (and I'm guessing you don't). I once had clear glass, and I detested it. It shows the spots much more, and besides, why would you want to see out in a shower, or have somebody see in?

JMHO, of course.

I really wanted a home with a "snail shower"...no glass, no door, but that didn't happen. Our showers have three sides glass.

Seem to remember a thread on cleaning shower glass once before. So please forgive me if I'm repeating myself. Have you tried WD-40? I never would have believed it but it actually did an outstanding job on ours and we've been able to keep it clean with regular stuff since.

What exactly do you do with the WD-40?

DW read it somewhere. Sprayed it on the glass, let it sit a minute then wiped it off. The glass was 'milky', 'fogged' etc but was clean and clear afterward. We had tried several of the usual cleaners over the years since we purchased the house with no success. It's in our master bath off of our bedroom so not many people saw it. Nice to have it clean however. Can't guarantee the same results of course but it worked for her. Now we just clean it with regular cleaners. Snopes doesn't seem to have an opinion but it does say it's a petroleum-based product and the main ingredient is >60% naphtha. FWIW

Sorry to hear that. Would have been cheaper than replacing the doors. I thought she was nuts when she tried it on ours but for some reason it did a great job.
